Candidate, issue petitions filed for May 5 primary

LISBON — Columbiana County officeholders Probate/Juvenile Court Judge Thomas M. Baronzzi of Lisbon, Commissioner Mike Halleck of Salem and Auditor Nancy Gause Milliken of Lisbon will seek re-election unopposed for the Republican nominations in the May 5 primary, with no Democrats filing for the seats.

The deadline for partisan candidates, local issues and local options to file their petitions and paperwork with the Columbiana County Board of Elections was 4 p.m. Wednesday.

State Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel, R-New Waterford, 79th District, also will run unopposed for re-election in the Republican primary, but she’ll have some competition in the fall from Democratic candidate Bob Guy, East Liverpool, who’s unopposed for the Democratic primary.

State Sen. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, 33rd District, will run unopposed for re-election in the Republican primary and face in the fall Michael L. Kripchak, of Youngstown, who’s running unopposed for the Democratic primary.

U.S. Rep. Michael A. Rulli, R-Salem, Sixth District, will face opposition in the Republican primary from Julie Kelley of Sherrodsville. Democrats filing for the Sixth District seat include Sean Connolly of Canfield, Malcolm Stephen Ritchie of Dover and Adrian Vitus of Poland.

Republican candidates for Seventh District Court of Appeals include David Comstock of Poland, Molly K. Johnson, Donald P. Scott and Judge Mark Anthony Hanni, all of Canfield. No Democrats filed.

Columbiana County Republican Party Chairman David W. Johnson of Salem will face competition in the race for Republican State Central Committee Man from Christopher Zelonish of Youngstown.

Candidates for Columbiana County Republican Central Committee also filed, with a handful of contested races. In Salem City 1-A, the candidates include James Armeni Sr., Tod Mumpire and Tony Ieropoli, with Roy Paparodis and Dennis Plegge vying for Salem 3-C. In Madison Township West Point, Tim Plunkett will go against Duane Nickell. In Middleton Township Negley, Steve Kemp will go against Richard L. Kroesen. In Perry Township Southwest, William Boardman Davidson Chuck will go against Doug Sampson. In Leetonia Village, the candidates include 

Adam W. Bailey Sr., Kevin M. Siembida and Suzanne M. Tobuck. In Unity Township New Waterford, Micah J. Guy will go against Kevin Graham. In Unity Township North, the candidates include David J. Mollenkopf and Timothy S. Weigle. Candidates for Unity Township Southeast include Matthew Dodge and Mark E. Guy. All the rest of the candidates in the other precincts that are filled are unopposed.

Issues filed include: Wayne Township, additional 3-mill, five-year permanent improvement levy; Leetonia income tax replacement and increase; St. Clair  Township additional, continuous 3-mill levy; and Butler Township 0.75-mill, five-year fire levy renewal.

Local options include: Englefield Inc., dba Alliance Duchess C-2 (Monday through Friday sales) and D-2 (Sunday sales) in Knox Township Northwest; REB 2nd Drive Thru, dba Gina’s Drive Thru (Sunday sales) in East Liverpool 1-B; Gerneaux Hospitality, LLC, dba Rumpled Queen, (Sunday sales), Salem 2-A; Quaker Beverage, dba Gene’s Drive Thru, (Sunday sales), Salem 2-A; and Aldi’s Inc., dba Calcutta Aldi’s 23 (Monday through Friday sales and Sunday sales), St. Clair Township Calcutta.

The Columbiana County Board of Elections will meet at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 10 to take action regarding the candidate petitions and local options.
