Salem BOE reorganizes

SALEM — The Salem Board of Education held its annual reorganizational meeting on Monday.

The board of education’s 2025 president will continue to serve in 2026, as Brittany Maniscalco was nominated for a new term by 2025 board Vice President Dianna Barley with no competing nominations. Maniscalco will be joined as a board officer by Gregg Warner, who was nominated by board member Ted Bricker and was also the only nomination for his office.

Maniscalco and board member Carol Hrvatin will serve as delegate and alternate, respectively, for the annual Ohio School Board Association Capital Conference in the fall, and Dr. Austin Frederickson was re-appointed school medical director for calendar year 2026. The fee for copies of meetings, agendas or individual meeting notices will also remain that same at 10 cents per copy.

The board also approved its meeting schedule for 2026, with meetings set to continue being held at 7 p.m. in the high school library. Meeting dates for 2026 will include: Feb. 23, March 16, April 20, May 18, June 29, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 9, and Dec. 14.

The board also approved several other routine items including: the establishment of a $10,000 board service fund; motions of authorization for Superintendent Sean Kirkland and Treasurer Mike Douglas; participation in all available federally funded grants and projects; assignment of special education students; the designation of the Salem News as the district’s official newspaper, with continued use of the Morning Journal and the Alliance Review for required publications such as legal ads, notices and financial reports; submission of the 2025-2026 tax budget to the Columbiana County Auditor.

The board of education will meet next at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23.
