Wellsville Finance Committee meets to discuss cost of fixing trucks

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Village Council Finance Committee met Tuesday to discuss possible options for fixing the village’s trucks.

Village Administrator Jeff Cope requested during the last council meeting for members to consider allowing the Street Department to have the two trucks used for salting and plowing converted from electrical systems to hydraulic systems due to too many issues with the electrical systems.

Cope noted that the pumps on the trucks go bad on an average of every six to seven months.

He also noted that it would cost roughly $19,000 to have both trucks converted.

Council President Keith Thorn told Cope at the council meeting that he wasn’t comfortable giving that approval and wanted to see the request go through the Finance Committee for further discussion and research.

Council President Keith Thorn and Finance Committee members Aaron Smith, Alana Amato and Michael Lombardozzi discussed converting the trucks would be feasible at that price and what other options were available.

Cope was supposed to be in attendance but notified the committee that something had come up and he would not be able to attend.

Lombardozzi said in the committee meeting that it does not seem cost effective to spend the money converting the truck and he can’t see spending the $19,000 on the two small trucks. He also questioned why the larger truck owner by the village is not in use.

Council/Committee Member Aaron Smith said he would be reaching out to Cope on Wednesday to see why the truck wasn’t being used –is there anything wrong with it and if so, what would need to be done to get it fixed.

Smith questioned if the truck isn’t being used, why is the village is holding keeping – could it be sold with the money from the sale being used for repairs or purchase of another truck.

Lombardozzi noted the trucks need regular maintenance to keep them in good running condition.

Lombardozzi also said that he would recommend getting a V-Box spreader for the trucks or to consider just having the trucks outfitted with new wiring harnesses . he again emphasized regardless of what option was selected the trucks would need regular maintenance.

Lombardozzi said he would make calls on Wednesday to get prices on V-Box spreaders and getting the trucks fitted with new wiring harness.

Smith said that the wiring harnesses may be the best option to go with because it would probably be the least costly option. If they were installed correctly and maintained it would eliminate the electrical issues.

The committee decided to send the matter onto council as members feel more information is needed before making a decision.

Smith hopes to have the information before the next council so itcan present an option to council for approval — and that members must act quickly because now wintertime is not a good time to have salt/plow trucks down.

The committee did decide to move forward to council a proposal submitted at the last council meeting to update the village computers and servers. The village will need to purchase several new computers because some of the ones they have are incapable of upgrading to Windows 11.

According to Smith and Thorn renewing the contract and upgrading the computers would be a major expense but needs to be done.

A Park Board Committee meeting will be held Jan. 15 at 6 p.m., and The Garden Club will meet on Jan. 24 at 11 a.m.

The next council meeting will be held Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

All meetings are held in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
