SHS Alumni Weekend opens Friday

The Salem High School Alumni Association invites all Salem alumni and friends to participate in the SHS Alumni Weekend activities scheduled on Friday-through-Sunday, Aug.8-10.

Numerous class reunions are being held at locations throughout Salem. Several activities are being planned by the association and other community organizations and businesses in conjunction with the annual Freed Fest, a tribute to Alan Freed, a 1940 SHS alumnus who coined the phrase, “Rock and Roll.”

Friday evening starts the fun with a live music concert at McCulloch Park in downtown Salem. Two SHS graduates will offer musical entertainment sponsored by the Tourism Advisory Board of Salem. Joe Rottenborn, SHS Class of 1966, will present old-time favorites from 5-7 p.m. John Volio, SHS Class of 1971, will present Rock & Roll favorites from 7-9 p.m.

On Saturday, an open house will be held at the SHSAA office in downtown Salem from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. All are invited to stop in and view the Salem memorabilia and the Salem Alumni Art Wall. Light refreshments will be served, and several free raffles will be held during the event. After visiting the SHS Alumni Association’s Open House, alumni and friends are encouraged to take part in the downtown Freed Fest music and shopping activities at Kast Iron Soda Works, the Salem Community Theater, and Nature and Nurture Maker’s Market.

On Sunday, a celebration will be held at Waterworth Memorial Park for the Salem High School Alumni Night sponsored by the Salem Summer Concert Series. The popular band Jimmy and The Soul Blazers will be featured with the music beginning at 6 p.m. An amazing “Cars of the Decades” display will also be enjoyed. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs, and alumni are encouraged to wear red and black.

Starting at $2.99/week.
