Perry trustees discuss salt storage building
PERRY TOWNSHIP — The board of trustees further discussed plans to either renovate or replace the township’s salt storage building in its meeting Monday.
Trustee Chair Steve Bailey said that the final quote had come in to potentially replace the township’s salt storage building, which trustees said had significant corrosion to its entryway and wooden structures in their last meeting. The cost to build a new storage building with cement walls which will be more resistant to corrosion and a paved entryway outright is estimated at approximately $70,000 and with a further quote of $6,700 to tear down and haul away the existing building leaving behind the cement walls and roof structure; while the cost to repair the current building was estimated at approximately $40,000.
Trustee Tony Ieropoli said that the remaining structure after the demolition could be used to store other materials like gravel, and that he felt it was “a no-brainer” to move forward with a new building. Bailey said that the township still had extra funding budgeted for paving beyond the cost of chip and seal which could be used to cover part of the cost, and that the rest of the cost could be paid from the road department budget. Trustees ultimately agreed to place the decision on the agenda for their next meeting now that all the quotes for both options were in.
Ieropoli also said that the Pine Lake Road paving project was still on schedule and could begin grinding Thursday or Friday, and that Goshen township trustees had agreed to a collaboration agreement between the road departments, reducing costs for both townships and improving safety for the workers.
“We’ll have a guy on each piece of equipment, the truck, the skid steer, and the roller, and one watching traffic, which will make the job run smoother, quicker, and safer. This will benefit both Perry Township and Goshen Township by not having to hire a part-timer,” said Ieropoli. “We will be taking a log on that, how many hours, what days, what we did. It will be mostly for blacktop, but we might have something here and there that we need help with.”
Other matters approved included a motion to replace two garage doors and openers at the South Station for $8,170 from Garage Door Openers and Doors and to replace one garage door panel for $757, the cost of which will be reimbursed through the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) Energized Community Grant, and the approval of a resolution of necessity requesting the county auditor certify tax valuation information in anticipation of levying a tax in excess of the 10-mill limitation in preparation to seek renewal of the townships 1-mill police levy in the upcoming election in November.
During his report Zoning Inspector Dan Bowers said that in total he issued 19 permits and three zoning violations in April and that there was a noticeable increase in projects at the end of the month.
“Toward the end it seemed like I was getting two or three in a day there for a few days,” said Bowers.
So far this month Bowers has issued eight permits and two violations, noting that several more were pending as people begin working on pool and fence projects. Bowers also reminded residents to mow their grass.
The board’s next regular meeting, which would have fallen on Memorial Day, is canceled and the board of trustees will meet next at 4 p.m. June 9.
