June activities at BC Wildlife Education Center

Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m.-noon: Join Chip Hudson in the Wildlife Center classroom and learn how to tie your own flies so you can catch more fish this season. Registration is required and class size is limited to 15. Suitable for ages 10 and older. All supplies provided. Cost is $15 per person. Attendees will flies to take home. Register by sending your contact information to beavercreekw@aol.com. Register by June 5.

Saturday, June 7 from 1 – 5 p.m.: Flint Knapping and Arrow Making. Spend some time under the pavilion and watch Chip Hudsondemonstrate how to make arrowheads from different materials and how to make arrows using the arrowheads. Attendees can examine samples of his work, including knives, bows, and arrows, and ask questions.

Sunday, June 15 from noon – 1:30 p.m.: Stream Stomp!! Meet Matthew Smith and Ryan Moss from ODNR Div. of Natural Areas and Preserves in the parking lot of Beaver Creek State Park, 12021 Echo Dell Road for a fun time finding critters that live in Beaver Creek, a Wild & Scenic River. They will identify what is found and talk about water quality and how it affects these organisms. You must wear boots or closed-toe shoes to get in the creek for this activity. Come prepared to have fun and maybe get wet. After the program attendees can have a picnic in the park and then visit the Wildlife Education Center. This event will be cancelled in the case of unsafe high water or rainstorms.

Sunday, June 15 from noon – 1:30 p.m.: Observing Nature Up Close. Join BCWEC volunteers as they show images of macroinvertebrates from Beaver Creek under their dissection microscopes. Attendees can learn how microscopes work and examine some of the small living creatures that live in Beaver Creek.

Sunday, June 15 from noon – 1:30 p.m.: – Carolyn’s Nature Craft – Rock Painting. Join some BCWEC volunteers under the pavilion for a rock-painting adventure! Kids will paint two rocks–one to keep as a cute pet rock, and one to leave behind, adding to the “pet rock snake” around the pavilion. It’s a creative way to celebrate nature and leave a lasting mark at our wildlife center. All supplies provided for the first 25 participants.

Sunday, June 15 from 1 – 4 p.m.: Scavenger hunt Logan’s Loop Trail. Kids and their adults can take a fun short hike on Logan’s Loop trail, located behind the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center, and try to find all the animals on the scavenger hunt list. When the hunt is completed, families will receive a booklet about the animals found on the trail. Adults can pick up the scavenger hunt paper, a pencil, and a clip board under the pavilion. The hike is .6 miles long and has a couple steeper areas. Participants should wear sturdy shoes. Will be canceled in case of bad weather.
