True Value Hardware closing in Salem

SALEM — True Value Hardware’s Salem store will be shutting down in September.

True Value General Manager Tyler Binkley confirmed Tuesday that Sept. 8 will be the final day for the store on East State Street. While Binkley said that he couldn’t offer specific details, the impending closure had been attributed to declining sales.

“I can’t really go into the specifics, but Sept. 8 will be our last day,” said Binkley.

According to Binkley, all the store’s employees had been offered new positions “elsewhere in the company” and “about 10 employees” will be directly impacted by the store’s closing.

Binkley also announced that effective today the Salem location only would begin an “everything must go sale,” with 10% off all in stock merchandise.

While rumors that the location will be filled by a Planet Fitness following the store’s closure could not be confirmed Tuesday evening, Sustainable Opportunity Development Center Executive Director Julie Needs said that while she hadn’t spoken with anyone from the company directly, she had heard rumors approximately two to three months ago that there had been interest in potential locations within the city.

“I had heard rumors a few months ago about looking into potential locations in the community a few months ago, but never heard anything about them settling on a location,” said Needs.

Planet Fitness could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
