Joy Smith, a junior at Lisbon David Anderson High School, recently earned her driver’s license. She is the first student in Columbiana County to complete the Drive to Succeed Scholarship program, an initiative aimed at helping students achieve this important milestone.
Joy’s journey to obtaining her license included completing a comprehensive driver’s training course that involved both online and in-car lessons. She recently passed her driver’s exam, marking a significant achievement not only for herself but also for the Drive to Succeed program.
In addition to her academic achievements, Joy is a varsity cheerleader and plans to attend Columbiana County Career and Technical Center in the fall to study Precision Machinery. Both she and her mother, Angela Smith, are thrilled about her new independence and the opportunities that come with having a driver’s license.
The Drive to Succeed Scholarship program, which Joy learned about at school, provides eligible students with approximately $500 to cover the costs of driver’s education. Funded by the Ohio Department of Traffic Safety and managed by the Columbiana County Educational Service Center in partnership with the Business Advisory Council and the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, the program aims to support students in obtaining their driver’s license.
Reflecting on her experience, Joy shared her excitement about the freedom that comes with having a license and the prospect of securing a part-time job. She acknowledged that learning to drive was challenging, particularly the maneuverability skills, but with practice, it became easier.
Angela Smith praised the Drive to Succeed program, highlighting its financial benefits amid rising costs of living. “The cost of everything is so high — groceries, utility bills, medical costs, just to name a few. This program is beneficial in lots of areas,” she said.
The Drive to Succeed Scholarship program continues to offer support to students aged 15 1/2 to 18 who attend school in Columbiana County. Interested individuals can learn more by visiting their school counselor, checking the Columbiana County Educational Service Center website at ccesc.k12.oh.us, or contacting Marian Dangerfield at 330-424-9591.
