Using Space Telescopes to Study Galaxies Near and Far

COLUMBIANA – Dr. Patrick Durrell will return to the Columbiana Main Street Theatre at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 for the free program Using Space Telescopes to Study Galaxies Near and Far.

Durrell will outline not only the many different types of galaxies that exist, but also how these change over time. Exquisite images and spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope have provided a wealth of information and stunning images about evolved nearby galaxies where we can study the individual stars, and young galaxies that are so far away that light has taken billions of years just to reach us.

Durrell is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Youngstown State University and the Warren M. Young Chair of Physics and Astronomy, through his work as the Director of YSU’s Ward Beecher Planetarium.

Durrell actively conducts research on stars and star clusters in nearby galaxies as well as studies of extremely faint, low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies using data from some of the largest telescopes in the world, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

Starting at $2.99/week.
