Truck carrying hazard waste from derailment site crashes in Geauga County
NOVELTY, Ohio — A truck carrying hazard waste, reportedly from the East Palestine train derailment site, crashed in a Geauga County community early Tuesday morning.
According to a press release issued by the Russell Fire Department, a dual-axel tanker carrying a Class 9 hazardous material overturned off the roadway on state Route 306 near the intersection of Chagrin Mills and Chillicothe roads at 5:17 a.m. in Novelty. Class 9 hazardous material is a classification for “miscellaneous” materials that don’t belong in any of the other hazardous material categories, like explosive, flammable, radioactive or others, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Approximately 4 to 5 gallons of the material possibly spilled but were contained by Hazmat crews.
The driver of the truck was treated and transported to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital. Multiple utility lines and utility pole were knocked down as a result of the incident.
Representatives from the trucking company, Ohio EPA, Ohio Public Utilities Commission, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Valley Enforcement Group Accident Investigation Unit, Norfolk Southern, and utility companies all responded to the incident.
According to published news reports, the truck, which was operated by Kuhnle Brothers Inc. of Cleveland, was loaded on Friday, Dec. 29. It was temporarily parked at the trucking company’s facility before it headed out to a Vickery Environmental site in Northwest Ohio for disposal in a deep well injection site, according to the EPA.
The truck was carrying about 5,000 gallons of hazardous waste from the train derailment site — mostly rainwater collected from the area that was not treated by the village’s wastewater treatment facility, according to an EPA spokesperson.
