Calcutta Lions host meeting

CALCUTTA – The Calcutta Lions Club held its regular meeting Nov. 14 at the Peter Metrovich Community Center. Lion and Secretary Sharon Hall called the meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all. Lion and Chaplain Marianne Wolf led the invocation and provided dinner.

The minutes to the previous meeting were handed out. Lion Tim Coalmer made a motion to accept, seconded by Kathy Barker. Motion was carried.

The treasurer’s report was handed out by Lion Marianne Wolf. Coalmer made a motion to accept, seconded by Lion Dave Elliott. Motion was carried.

The Calcutta Lions Club recently participated in the Halloween Parade held by the Calcutta Fire Department by handling registration and handing out bags of candy the club members and club purchased.

The club will be adopting two families from Beaver Local elementary school. Two families will be receiving Giant Eagle gift cards.

Hall reported that the club will also be having an auction at their Christmas party where the Beaver Local Choir will be the entertainment. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to Pediatric Cancer Research.

Hall also stated that the club participated in four highway clean-ups this year through the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). The club will receive a road sign for the club and will be posted along the on/off ramps of routes 7 and 11.

Lion Gary Freeh reported the club will host another blood drive for the Red Cross on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Go to the Red Cross website to sign-up for a time to donate.

Freeh also informed members that the club will be playing bingo Friday with residents of Crossroads.

Coalmer and Joe Hall will be working together in the spring to place a Blessing Box in Calcutta for those in need of food items. The box will also have another side where people can donate and/or pick up books.

The Calcutta Lions will be holding another pasta dinner fundraiser, take-out or dine-in, May 5 at the Calcutta Fire Department. More information will be forthcoming closer to that date on where to obtain tickets.

The club recently donated its 10th bench to Bruster’s from its Trex recycling program. Plastic bags can be dropped off in bins at the Calcutta YMCA or Columbiana County Memorial Park Cemetery.

The club will be participating in ringing the bell for the Salvation Army Dec. 16 at Busy Beaver.

Coalmer made a motion to adjourn at 7:30 p.m, seconded by Lion Kathy Barker.
