Student in custody following threat at Leetonia school

LEETONIA — The final day of school this year did not happen and one Leetonia 9th-grade student is in custody at the Louis Tobin Attention Center following a perceived pipebomb threat on Friday morning.

According Leetonia Police Chief Allen Haueter, a teacher grading a French assignment determined Friday morning that the 15-year-old’s slideshow project contained the word “pipebomb” covered up with an illustration of a giraffe.

Other students had not yet entered the buildings and were placed back onto buses and sent home. The student alleged responsible was spotted by Leetonia Sgt. Randy Schnieder in the parking lot and was taken into custody. He is charged with inducing panic and making terroristic threats.

Superintendent Dennis Dunham said the school proceeded by using “extreme caution” and even after the building was thoroughly searched without anything found, he did not feel comfortable bringing students back to the school on Friday.

“We really appreciate the police, the fire departments and the parents’ cooperation ,” Dunham said.

Class Day, which had been scheduled on Friday morning to present seniors with honors and scholarships, along with underclass awards, has been rescheduled for noon today. Graduation will follow at 1 p.m.

Dunham said teachers will return on Tuesday to accept returned technical items from students and for students to get belongings.

Starting at $2.99/week.
