Southern board approves tabled list of coaches
SALINEVILLE — A couple weeks after tabling a list of spring coaches after a parent approached the board with concerns about one of them, Southern Local’s Board of Education passed the list of supplemental contracts at a special meeting held Thursday.
The coaches on the list for supplemental contracts were Gerald Grimm, baseball head coach; Kyle Exline, baseball assistant coach; Brent Boyle, softball head coach; Lori Biser and Chris Lewis, both softball assistant coaches; head boys track coach Mike Skrinjar; assistant boys track coach Jimmy Malone; Kathy Randolph, head girls track coach; Chastity Sloan, junior high girls coach; Rich Sloan, junior high boys coach; Rich Wright, wrestling coach and Todd Walters, assistant girls track coach.
No comment was made about the concerns voiced by a parent in executive session about one of the coaches, who was not named. However, one board member, Rodney Edmiston, voted no on the list and it passed 5-1.
The board also approved a $13 per hour rate of pay for substitutes working in a variety of positions — bus drivers (retroactive to Jan. 1, 2019), cafeteria workers, custodians para professionals and secretaries. Treasurer Greg Sabbato said the pay rate was really already in effect and the auditors wanted it clarified. The school had begun paying the $13 per hour during a time they could not get substitute bus drivers.
Additionally, the board approved the pay rate of $125 to $150 per day for substitute teachers and school nurses, with the rate determined by the superintendent. It was noted this actually started during COVID-19 pandemic as the district tried to find substitutes which would be exclusive to Southern Local and paying them more to do so.
The board also approved a $3,500 stipend to Emily Marcolini, who provides speech therapy services to the district, including working outside of normal hours.
Finally, with the retirement of a bond and additional money collected totaling $52,804, the board approved a request to be allowed to transfer that money into the New Permanent Improvement Fund for 2020. That fund can be used for improvements in the district, including, but not limited to security projects. Sabbato will now forward the request to the budget commissioner for approval.
The board did not mention what project it intends to use the money for at this time.
The next regular meeting of the board of education is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Feb. 8.
