Naples receives spot in OMEA All-State Band and Regional Orchestra
Phillip Naples, a senior at South Range High School, earned a place in the percussion section of the 2022 Ohio All-State Band as well in the Northeast Ohio Regional Orchestra.
Selection for the All-State Band was determined by audition. Applicants to All-State had to submit audio recordings of required etudes as well as perform a Class A or B solo. Percussionists had to submit four audio recordings demonstrating their talents by performing on timpani, concert snare drum and a keyboard instrument, (xylophone or marimba).
Phillip has been the principal chair percussionist at South Range High School’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band since he was a sophomore as well the lead snare in the South Range Raider Marching Band Drum Line. He has earned several excellent and superior ratings in the District 5 Solo and Ensemble Contests since the eighth grade in piano, marimba, snare and drum set and received multiple superior ratings in the National Federation of Music Clubs Piano competition as well as a former featured pianist in the Youngstown Music Teachers Association’s High School Gala.
Last year, Phillip was awarded the principal percussionist position in the Youngstown State University’s Youth Orchestra. His other accomplishments include two time State and National Qualifier in the Duo Category for his school’s speech and debate team. He previously lettered in golf and has now joined his school’s cross country and track team for his senior year where he found a passion for running.
Phillip’s future plans include pursuing a degree in the medical field as well as to continue performing on the drum set. He has received piano instruction from Rick Barber and currently takes percussion lessons from Edward Davis and James Richley.
Phillip is the son of Phillip and Anne-Marie Naples of Columbiana.
