LISBON — A Wellsville man indicted as a major drug offender was sentenced to an indefinite term of 10 to 15 years in prison, plus an additional one year for a weapons charge, for a total consecutive minimum of at least 11 years.

Dennis Byers, 37, Chester Avenue, appeared recently for sentencing in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on multiple drug charges related to an April 3, 2022 traffic stop when he possessed more than 153 grams of cocaine.

The sentence included 12 months each for a third-degree felony having weapons under disability charge and fourth-degree felony possession of fentanyl-related compound, to be served concurrent to each other, but consecutive to the larger drug charges.

The first-degree felonies of possession of cocaine and aggravated possession of drugs included a forfeiture specification, with Byers ordered to forfeit $6,987. He was also given mandatory fines of $10,000 each for the first-degree felony drug counts.

Charges of no valid license, trafficking in cocaine and aggravated trafficking in drugs were dismissed, along with the major drug offender specification.

All the charges stemmed from the traffic stop when Byers had a firearm in the center console of his vehicle. He was prohibited from having a weapon due to a previous conviction for trafficking in drugs in 2012. Drugs found in his possession included 153.71 grams of cocaine, methamphetamine at 50 times the bulk amount but less than 100 times the bulk amount and a fentanyl-related compound equal to at least 10 unit doses but less than 50 unit doses.
