In the moment

Editor: If overzealous preservationists had their way, we could all still be living in log cabins. That is, of course, an exaggeration, but it alerts one to the unrealistic and cost-prohibitive effort to save every old and often potentially dangerous structure. Lisbon Council’s reactivation of an Architectural and Historical Review Board (AHRB) to benefit a single business owner attempting to obtain a liquor license has instead opened a Pandora’s Box of potential restrictions to property owners in the designated area. Case in point is a local brewery’s expansion that ...

What integrity?

Editor: Kris Kobach, vice chairman of Mr. Trump’s newly formed commission, the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, sent a request to all 50 states asking them to provide “voter data.” This request wants the voters’ full names, including middle names, addresses, DOB, last four digits of the Social Security number, party affiliation, military status and some other personal information. Well gee-whiz, I wonder if Kobach would find a little more about maintaining our election integrity if he would request a little information from Vladimir Putin. Bob ...

Divine comedy

Editor: How do we explain the laughter and applause of the audiences who listen to the filthy and agenda driven hate of Stephen Colbert and Kathy Griffin? It is because they are conditioned to laugh much like Pavlov’s dog who salivated when he heard the bell and then was given a treat. Jack Kerouac, a well-traveled commentator of the American Scene, remarked, “This is the story of America. Everybody is going around doing what they think they are supposed to do.” These new age millennials have never had any real life experiences or had to struggle to make ends meet, so they ...

Handwritten letters of 25 words or less may be considered if the handwriting is legible. Longer letters, however, must be typewritten. Letters which drastically exceed the word limit may be rejected outright. It is not the responsibility of the newspaper to edit them to conform to length. No ...

The right direction

Editor: As a parent myself, I know how hard it is to raise children in this day and age and in this area. I had lots of anxiety raising a family of six rambunctious boys. I had to ask some very important questions. What kind of adults will they become? Will they be ready to face the challenges in life after high school? Would they become responsible, reliable and respectful members of society? I even wondered how I would teach them the basics, such as cooking meals, maintaining a clean household and financial accountability. I hoped that as they grew into young men, they would ...
