A vote for the past and the future

Editor: The American poet/playwright Edgar Lee Masters in “Spoon River Anthology” creates an intriguing catalogue of tombstone epitaphs of the residents of a small American town. The history, the charm, the character of the Spoon River could well be Lisbon, with its history-filled cemetery depicting the many types of people: rich and poor, progressive and reticent, successful and downtrodden who rest eternally in our local cemetery. When I was writing the Lisbon book for the “Images of America” series, there was no question that I would find and include so much of our ...

Just be Columbiana

Editor: Columbiana has and always will be a community that is willing to embrace what we are. We are not a community that needs perfection and intrusion by those who want and will attempt to paint our future in a manner that they believe is progress. We are a community of farmers, accountants, engineers, carpenters, doctors, mechanics, chefs, etc. We can and should embrace all. What am I implying? We are a community that can support HOAs, we are a community that can support the arts, we are a community that can support the blue-collar roots that are part of us all. We are full of ...

Cemetery support

Editor: As mayor of Lisbon, I would like to draw your attention to the Lisbon Village Cemetery renewal levy on the ballot in the upcoming election. In my mind, the cemetery is on of the village treasures of which we should be very proud. The cemetery is beautifully maintained and operated very effectively and efficiently. This renewal levy generates the majority of the funds of the day to day operations of the cemetery. The other sources of revenue are: sale of burial sites, opening/closing costs and other services related to burials. The number of burials varies from year to ...

Where we stand

Editor: A little over a year ago a spotlight was shining brightly on our city from around the world. The secret of opioid addiction was no longer. The city administration and police department decided to take a stand against heroin and opioids like no one ever had. Releasing the photo of that boy in the backseat, grandma and her boyfriend overdosed in the front, lit a fire that many said would only do harm to our city. Some questioned such a drastic measure, others embraced it. The city administration went to work, bringing departments together, combining resources, networking with ...

A yes vote

Editor: The Lisbon Cemetery Board has a renewal levy on the November ballot this year. I firmly believe that it is in the best interest of all Lisbon residents to vote yes on this issue. The cemetery board members work very hard, along with the workers they employ, to keep our cemetery attractive and a pleasant place to visit our loved ones resting there. I have, over many years, worked closely with them during the Memorial Day observance and found all those involved with maintaining our cemetery to be very cooperative and interested in making sure all goes well for our program ...
