SALEM -- Quakerfest returns to Salem Saturday.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and community organizations are coming together to offer a day of fun for everyone from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The festivities will extend across the entire downtown area with giveaways, activities for children, live music and special sales.
Liberty Park
At Liberty Park, located at the corner of State Street and Ellsworth Avenue, attendees will be able to enjoy live music by Kelly and Co. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. who will perform favorites from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Children can enjoy games and cotton candy courtesy of the Gina McQuillan State Farm Agency, as well as pumpkin bowling and painting sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and receive a free pumpkin while supplies last courtesy of Kaiser Towing.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be handing out free coloring books, key chains, safety brochures, and stress balls. Weather permitting the Columbiana County Humane Society will also be on hand at Liberty Park, giving people the opportunity to adopt dogs and cats.
Nearby in front of the chamber office at 210 East State Street, the Chamber Beautification Committee will be selling shirts, and Summit Federal Credit Union will be giving away coloring books and other swag.
McCulloch Park
At McCulloch Park downtown Curtis Conser will perform from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will also be face painting sponsored by the Salem Interact Club, free cookies while supplies last courtesy of Salem Kiwanis, activity books and crayons courtesy of the Salem Area Safety Council.
There will also be vendors on State Street surrounding McCulloch Park. Several businesses downtown will also be participating. Sew Quality will be offering free candy, in addition to their usual offerings of candles and unique gifts, and Heggy's Confectionery will have free stickers and "mini collectible resin animals."
Heggy's will also have apple cider slushies and cinnamon rolls for purchase, and the Studio of Fine Arts by Anissa DiLeo will have make and take art and mosaic pumpkins for a $5 donation. Trolls Jewelry will be running a special sale of 10% off Lafonn jewelry, 20% off Carla | Nancy B jewelry, and 25% off America 250 Christmas ornaments.
Broadway Avenue
On Broadway Avenue, Delight on Broadway will host live music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Howard Hannah will be hosting free games for kids and giveaways. Zieglers Custom Designs will have free magnet painting, coffee, apple cider, and donuts, and a special sale for 10% off all in-store purchases. There will also be live music by Josiah Showalter in Lincoln Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Coinciding events
Several other events will also coincide with Quakerfest Saturday, including the kick-off of the annual Warm-Up Salem Winter accessory drive. Donations of winter hats, scarves and mittens will be accepted at the Chamber of Commerce from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at Simply Scarves and Such from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, which will be made available for those in need at no cost.
The City of Salem will be hosting a community day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lincoln Plaza, where residents will be able to meet and take photos with city personnel and learn about the services the city provides. The event will feature members of the city's police department and K-9 unit, the fire department and ambulance crew, and the street, parks, and health departments, as well as refreshments including free hot dogs donated by Fresh Mark, chips donated by Walmart, bottled water, and ice cream from Totally 80s Ice Ice Cream Shoppe.
The Salem High School Alumni Association will be hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the alumni association office at 330 E. State St. The alumni association is inviting the community to view a new mural commemorating the history of the Salem City School District titled "History of Salem Schools" which was painted by Anissa DiLeo. In addition to the mural's public debut, the open house will also feature light refreshments, and attendees will receive a raffle ticket for a Salem Quakers football donated by Haltec Corp.
