MASSILLON -- When United junior Camryn Jarrett saw none of the 16 regional high jumpers cleared 5 foot last week, she was ready to go.
"We were all pretty close," Jarrett said. "For me it's good because I know I can do better."
Jarrett won the Division III regional title with no misses through 5-foot-0 at Perry Stadium on Wednesday.
Jarrett -- who finished fifth at state last year -- will compete in the Division III state finals at 4 p.m. next Friday, June 2, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.
"I would like to place like last year and maybe do better," she said.
She entered the regional meet with a goal of a first-place finish.
"I was hoping for it," Jarrett said. "I knew the two ahead of me (last year) were seniors."
She knows she will need to do better than her district winning jump of 4-10 and her regional winning jump of 5-0 to get back on the podium.
"It's kind of a disappointment because I know I can do better," she said.
Crestview senior Kaitlyn Dewell placed fifth and East Palestine senior Delaney Snyder tied for seventh. Both cleared 4-foot-10.
Dewell, who had no misses through 4-10, was one jump away from a state berth.
Lordstown sophomore Cadence Lickwar hit the bar on her final jump at 5-0, but it stayed on, vaulting her past Dewell and into a tie for third place.
The weather was fine for the high jump competition. It did not rain until the second race of the evening, the boys 3200-meter relay.
"It rained at a couple of meets at the beginning of the season, but it has been sunny lately," Jarrett said.
Rain was steady the rest of the meet and was hardest during the girls 400-meter relay.
Jarrett is part of the Golden Eagles' 400 relay team that is trying to earn a return trip to the state meet.
She joined senior Mariah Eisenbraun, junior Grace Maroscher and sophomore Alli Zepernick on the 400 relay team that was third in its heat and fourth overall in 53.01 seconds.
"I just try to stay focused running," Jarrett said. "The baton can get slippery."
The top two in each heat plus the next four fastest time advance to Friday's finals.
Eisenbraun also advanced to Friday's finals as she was sixth-fastest in the 200 dash (26.85) and seventh-fastest in the 100 dash (12.97).
The top four in each event of the regional finals advance to the state track meet in Columbus on June 2-3.
New host
It is the first year Massillon Perry hosted the regional meet after being at Fairless High School in Navarre the past 16 years.
Of course there were some glitches along the way.
In the first race, the girls 3200-meter relay, runners got to their blocks with no batons around. Someone had to go to the school and bring back a box of new batons still in their wrappers.
Jarrett said the high jump is the same.
"It was just different surroundings," she said.
That included a Norfolk Southern train going just behind the stands.
Meet notes
¯ Coming up short of state berths in the girls shot put were Springfield senior Sara Chaszeyka in fifth (37-8) and Western Reserve senior Cheyenne Finney in sixth (37-1 1/2). Crestview freshman Sidney Rambo was 11th (34-0).
¯ Leetonia sophomore Roman Ferry was 15th in the boys long jump (18-4 1/4).
Lisbon junior Seth Stokes did not compete in the long jump Wednesday. He will be competing in the high jump on Friday.
¯ Columbiana's 3200 relay team of senior T.J. Carr, junior Aaron Thistlewaite, sophomore Nick Krusely and freshman Andy Schach was 14th (9:03.17).
¯ In the girls 3200 relay, United's Loren Swords, Molly Briceland, Abbey Crawford and Brynn Hofmeister was 13th (10:52.82) and Springfield's Courtney Hughes, Maren Abbattista, Samantha Smith and Grace Groner was 15th (11:45.73).
¯ Crestview's Kassity Miller, Kaitlyn Dewell, Makenna Perorazio and Taryn Gilbert were 10th (4:24.45) in the 1600 relay, while United's Grace Maroscher, Morgan Stamp, Alli Zepernick and Loren Swords were 16th (4:37.85).
¯ East Palestine senior Jacob Pancake posted the fastest time in the boys 400 dash, a personal-best 51.45.
¯ Lisbon senior Seth Davis was seventh-fastest in the boys 300 hurdles (41.94).
¯ Freshman Justin Wright is the lone Wellsville athlete remaining. He was second in his heat and sixth overall in the 100 dash (11.58).
He was 10th in the 200 dash (23.78) and Wellsville junior Brandon Patterson was 12th in the 300 hurdles (44.16).
¯ Columbiana freshman Kayla Muslovski was fifth-fastest in the girls 400 dash (61.41). She also will compete in the long jump Friday.
¯ Springfield senior Ethan Nezbeth advanced to Friday's finals in three events. Nezbeth was fourth-fastest in the boys 200 dash (23.23) and joined Luke Snyder, Austin Trebella and Garrett Walker on the 400 and 800 relay teams that were third fastest (44.95 and 1:32.38).
Walker was 10th-fastest in the 100 dash (11.89).
¯ Springfield's Anna Ohlin, Haley LaMorticella, Shantel Springer and Cierra Latronica were second-fastest in the 800 relay (1:49.60) and third-fastest in the 400 relay (52.25).
¯ Leetonia's 1600 relay team of Roman Ferry, Devon Champney, Douglas Rhodes and Johnathan Cress finished ninth (3:38.96). Columbiana's Jake Stoy, Joseph Bable, Aaron Thistlewaite and Zach Philips were 15th (3:42.72).
¯ Western Reserve sophomore Maddy Owen was 12th in the 100 hurdles (17.41) and Columbiana senior Madison Stryffeler was 14th in the 300 hurdles (52.29).
¯ The regional meet concludes Friday with the remaining field events at 5 p.m. and the running finals at 6 p.m.
