Helpers need to stir the EP pot

The East Palestine Area Historical Society is making final preparations for its annual Apple Butter Days and are looking for volunteers to prepare the apples and stir the 30 gallon copper kettles and then prepare for canning for the Oct. 8-10 event. Volunteers are asked to report to the park pavilion on the hill to help, beginning at 8 a.m. Oct. 8 with peeling, slicing, and grinding the 25 bushels of five varieties of apples. Lunch will be provided. On Oct. 9 and 10, the group will cook the apples and jar the apple butter. Volunteers are needed to stir the large kettles and help with canning, beginning at 8 a.m. In addition to making the apple butter, the group is sponsoring its third annual Car Cruise on 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 10 at the museum grounds. The public is invited to enjoy the day as apple butter is being prepared and stroll the grounds to enjoy the cars on display by their owners. There will be food, music, and a 50/50. Chefs gather at Common Ground

Common Ground’s mission Goodness Grows is hosting the Harvest of Hope chef competition from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Common Ground’s Church, North Lima. Guests get to sample food and there will be a basket raffle, a gift card tree and live music. Tickets are $20 ahead of time or $25 on the day of the event. Uncle Sam to host EP cook-off

The Chicken and Rib Cook-Off to benefit Social Concerns in East Palestine has been relocated from downtown to Uncle Sam’s on Taggart Street. The cook-off will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Coming home to Irondale

The Irondale Homecoming fall festival will be held this weekend at the park. Friday’s events include a fish fry at the fire station followed by bingo. At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Scout Troop 49 will conduct the flag-raising and Frankie Russell will sing the national anthem. Movin and Groovin Productions will provide inflatables ($5) and rock climbing ($2 per) beginning at 11 a.m. The car show is at noon, the Ruritan duck race at 2 p.m. and the dessert contest at 2:30. There will be music, games and food, including apple dumplings, all day Saturday. Thirty vendors are scheduled to be on hand. On Sunday, there will be a church service at 11 a.m. with gospel music in the park, followed by a covered dish dinner.

Pumpkin carving contest set

The Calcutta YMCA is hosting a jack-o’-lantern carving or painting contest for children from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Children must bring their own pumpkin, either real or artificial. Participants will compete in three age groups, 8 and under, 9-11 and 12-13, and in three categories: traditional, scariest and most creative. Kids must enter by Oct. 10. Creepy Hollows opens Saturday

The fifth annual Creepy Hollows Haunted Trail located in the East Palestine Park will be 7:30-10 p.m. Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Admission is $5.

Holiday bazaar planned at SCC

The ninth annual Holiday Bazaar Extraordinaire will be held Nov. 7 at the Salem Community Center. Sellers can reserve a table for $38 or if electricity is needed the cost will be $42. Church to have grand dedication

The First United Methodist Church of East Liverpool will have a musical program of piano solo, organ solo, piano and organ duets and piano quartets using two grand pianos at the same time 4 p.m. Oct. 11. The concert is being given to dedicate their newly acquired concert grand piano. The concert is free and everyone is welcome. A free will offering will be taken and a reception will follow the program.

Scahill to join veterans board

The Veterans Service Commission will appoint Thomas J. Scahill as a member of the Columbiana County Veterans Service Commission in Courtroom No. 1 at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday. Scahill, a Marine and twice-wounded Vietnam veteran, was the unanimous selection of the Common Pleas judges to fill the unexpired term of the late Joseph H. Petty, Sr.

Indoor yard sale set in Salem

The second annual Giant Indoor Yard Sale to benefit students in Anthony G. Martinelli’s art classes at Salem High School will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 17 in the high school cafeteria. Individuals who would like to donate to the yard sale may bring items to the high school 3:30-7 p.m. Oct. 16. Suggested items include housewares, tools, holiday decorations, books, games, puzzles, artwork, furniture (no sofas or overstuffed chairs), sporting equipment, etc. Items not accepted are televisions, clothing, shoes and bicycles. Lisbon water work set Tuesday

Lisbon water customers on East Washington Street will experience an interruption in service beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday while repairs are made to a waterline. The affected area will be East Washington from Jackson Street to and including Cross Street. Adjacent areas may notice lower pressure, and some discoloration may occur when service is restored.

Lisbon church collecting coats

Donations of new or good condition winter coats for a community-wide free distribution are now being accepted at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church, 114 E. Washington St. The distribution will be held along with other events at the church’s annual Make a Difference Day the morning of Saturday, Oct. 24. Coats may be dropped off weekdays at the church office using the east entrance wooden doors off the alley. It is helpful if all coats can be at the church by noon Oct. 21.

Input sought on park project

A community meeting on the Firestone Park restoration project will be held at 6:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the Columbiana High School auditorium. People are invited to view and hear a presentation, and submit input, in the master plan for the park.

Ghost hunter to visit library

Paranormal investigator Kimberly Mitchell will give a program on ghost hunting a 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Salem Library. She will show pictures and give a few history lessons of places such as Hillview Manor, Twin City Opera House, Prospect Place and more. Genealogy program set at library

Craft supply swap scheduled

The East Palestine Library will host a craft supply swap from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Participants are welcome to bring craft supplies they are no longer using and are ready to trade. The supplies will be sorted, and once everyone has contributed the swap will begin. People can take the same number of items they put in. Items that do not get claimed will be donated to charity. Tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes set

To help celebrate Frank Sinatra’s upcomming 100th birthday, the Dutch Village Inn, Columbiana, is sponsoring two productions honoring Sinatra’s biggest hits. “A Tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes” will be performed at noon Oct. 7 and 8 by Canton’s Michael Sonata, a Sinatra tribute artist (pictured). To make the experience seem authentic, Sonata will arrive at the Inn in a limousine at 11:45 a.m. for each performance and will be welcomed by a group of screaming bobby soxers. Raffle tickets for OSU game

Long’s Run Presbyterian Church’s building committee is selling raffle tickets for the OSU vs. Minnesota game for Nov. 7. Tickets are $5. Seats are located in Section 4B, Row 12, seats 13 and 14. Road in Homeworth to close

Cherry Street will be closed between Georgetown Road and Main Street in Homeworth for four weeks beginning Monday as the Columbiana County Engineers and Highway Department are doing a bridge deck replacement. The road will be closed to all traffic at the bridge but open to local traffic on either side.

Raider Regatta set for Monday

The 18th annual Raider Regatta will be held Monday at the pond at Memorial Park behind the Old School Complex with the first boat launching at 12:15 p.m. The Regatta will feature boats made by the sophomore class. Each boat will be made from cardboard and duct tape alone. Awards will range from Best of Show, Best two, three, four, five and six person boat, Best Design, Best Costume, Best Theme and Titanic, which is awarded for best unintentional sink. The public is invited.

Flu vaccines available in October

The Columbiana County General Health District will be administering flu shots for $25 at the following locations: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Oct. 5, Columbiana St. Jude’s Hall; 1-3 p.m. Oct. 5., East Palestine Park Community Center; 9:30-11 a.m. Oct. 8, Guilford Lake Ruritans; 1-3 p.m. Oct. 8, Salineville Kiwanis; and 9-11 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Columbiana County Health Department. High dose trivalent flu vaccine is also available for those 65 and older for $40. No appointment is necessary and most private insurances are accepted. Range sets homecoming parade

Students at South Range High School are gearing up for a new homecoming tradition. Each class has been working to create parade floats based upon a familiar movie to support the homecoming theme of “Hollywood.” The freshmen class chose The Wizard of Oz, the sophomore float is Batman, juniors chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and seniors created a Monsters Inc. float. The students will be displaying their work during a school parade that will be held 1:50 p.m. today at the K-12 Complex. Along with the school’s marching band and homecoming court, the local police and fire departments will be participating in this event that will involve the entire South Range student body. Each float will have a bucket attached to collect donations. The class officers are asking students and anyone who wishes to donate to choose their favorite float. All money received will be donated to the Shannon McEwan Scholarship. All classes have made their floats after school hours. Floats are to be at the school by 7:15 a.m. today. The floats will also be available for viewing tonight at Memorial Field as the Raiders take on the Lisbon Blue Devils.

People can meet its police force

The Center Township Police Department is holding an open house from 8-10 a.m. Saturday at the township hall in the Lisbon Industrial Park. Part-time police chief Adam Little will be there to meet with the public along with the officer who fills in for him, four auxiliary officers and the township trustees.

Elks to picnic with veterans

The Wellsville Elks Veterans Committee will hold a veterans appreciation luncheon Saturday in the upper pavilion at Hammond Park. The lunch will run from noon to 3 p.m. All retired and active military personnel and their families are welcome.

Dinner to benefit Matt Bowling

Wellsville First Christian Church will be hosting a drive-thru chicken dinner to benefit Matt Bowling 4-7 p.m. Oct. 3. Bowling was diagnosed with cancer and underwent extensive surgery removing part of his jaw and tongue. He will be hospitalized for up to two months and unable to work to support his family. All proceeds from the dinner will go to help with medical and household expenses. The dinner is a drive-thru curb service style, so pull up and park in the side parking lot and give the order. Dinner will be brought to the car. Cost is $7.

Coeverys helps SRMC effort

Coverys, a leading provider of medical professional liability insurance and related services, announced a $10,000 grant by the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation to Salem Regional Medical Center. The grant will be used to implement “The No-Fall Zone,” a project aimed at finding and executing the best practices for fall prevention and providing access to the tools needed to ensure a successful outcome.

ELO Historical dinner slated

The East Liverpool Historical Society’s 35th annual dinner,”Prohibition: Bootleggers, Rum Runners, Gunslingers” will be held 6 p.m. Nov. 5 at the East Liverpool Country Club. Book sale begins Saturday

The Minerva Library will host a book sale beginning Saturday and running through Oct. 3 and will feature a variety of books for all ages and interest for 25 cents each. Special interest books are sold at special prices. This fall the sale also includes large print books, books for children and teens and a selection of audiobooks on cassette, in addition to DVDs and VHS. The $1 a bag sale will be Oct. 3. All sale proceeds go toward the purchase of new library materials and to support the programs the library presents. EP sale is Saturday

The East Palestine Rotary will hold its 10th annual community yard sale 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the East Palestine Park. This event is open to individuals, non-profit organizations, clubs, churches, youth and civic groups selling rummage items, collectibles and commercial and craft vendors. Admission and parking is free. Sellers can rent an outdoor area for $10. Sellers will need to bring their own tables and set-up displays. Setup will begin at 7 a.m. and tear down at 4 p.m. The Rotary will have its food trailer at the event and will sell a variety of food. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50. Scarecrow contest set in Salem

The Salem Library and the Salem Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting their second annual Scarecrow Contest Oct. 10. Individuals, families, clubs, organizations, local businesses, schools, churches and anybody else are invited to participate. Wooden frames and rules will be given out at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Memorial Building. Contestants will have one week to build their scarecrow. On Oct. 10, the scarecrows will be set up in front of the library or Memorial Building between 12:30-1:30 p.m. Judging will take place between 1:30-2:30 p.m. while contestants have a fall party in the Memorial Building gym. Southern sets parent conferences

Southern Local will hold parent-teacher conferences on Thursday. Conferences will be held at scheduled times after school at both the elementary and high school. There will be no school on Friday as a compensation day for the conferences. Also, there will be no school on Oct. 5 to allow for professional development sessions for teachers.

Senior health program offered

The Salem Library is hosting the program “ABC’s of Medicare and Options for Health Care for Seniors” 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7. The program is for persons age 65 and older and family members who need to help seniors decide what health coverage is best and those who are charged as powers of attorney for loved ones. Mary Walker, a certified counselor for OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) will present the program. Southern planning book fair

Southern Local Elementary School will host its fall Scholastic Book Fair on Oct. 12-16. Students can participate in “Monster Book Fair Mania” throughout the school day in the library and will have a chance to win free books during upcoming contests. Librarian Donna Hart said a coloring contest will be held for grades PreK-4 and a poster contest for grades 5-6. Each grade will be scheduled to visit throughout the week from 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. and any of the students can stop by that Friday to purchase a book or two, while parents and other family members may also participate. The Robbins United Methodist Church in Washingtonville will host Soup to Go the first Wednesday of every month beginning Oct. 7. Homemade soups can be picked up between 3-5 p.m. Oct. 7 for $6 each at the church, located on Route 14 in the center of town.

Signups for Christmas assistance set

The Salem Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas assistance for families with children from Salem, Columbiana, Leetonia and Washingtonville from noon-3 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and for seniors without young children from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 30. Bring current photo ID, proof of all children and adults in the household (birth certificates, medical cards, or custody papers), picture ID for all other adults, proof of income and proof of all monthly bills. Children up to age 12 are eligible for toys and clothes.

Library to celebrate mythology

Oktoberfest coming to Minerva

Minerva’s Oktoberfest will be noon-9 p.m. Sept. 26 in Municipal Park, with live music, food, vendors, children’s activities and contests. There is no admission fee for the festival. Family activities will include a free hayride, make-and-take crafts and art projects, a petting zoo and pony rides, bounce houses provided by Three Sons’ Hardware, emergency vehicles from Sandy Creek Fire District, a hay-bale maze provided by Minerva FFA, a Lost French Golf scavenger hunt sponsored by Bartley Funeral Home with a gold nugget grand prize, pumpkin bowling and more. A variety of food choices will be available, from bratwurst and ribs to French waffles and kettle corn. Minerva United Methodist Church will provide a shuttle, noon-4 p.m., between Oktoberfest, the Stockers and Streeters On the Bricks Car Show, and the National Alpaca Farm Days celebration at the Natural Approach Farm Store, which will feature a scavenger hunt, tours of the farm, felting and spinning demos and alpaca-fiber apparel for sale. Tire dumping not permitted

At their township meeting Sept. 17, the Franklin Township trustees reported there is no more dumping of old tires being permitted at their township garage in Franklin Township in Summitville.

Drive-thru flu clinics in Salem

The Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will be hosting drive-thru flu clinics 1-3 p.m. Sept. 23 and 30 and every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. thereafter. Stop by the office in Salem and receive a vaccine without ever getting out of the car. The cost is $25. The agency will bill Medicare Part B or Anthem Senior Advantage Products (YRA, YRE, YRI, YRS, JRI, JRG, VOC and VOD prefixes only). Bring an insurance card. Book fair for Palestine students

The East Palestine School District will be holding a Book Fair the week of Oct. 19-23. The public is invited from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 19 and 2-5 p.m. Oct. 23 in the elementary gym. All proceeds go to the school.

Salem Rotary plans fall events

The Rotary Club of Salem is announcing their full fall line-up of fundraising events. Proceeds from A Taste of Pizza and The Annual Pancake Day will support the charitable projects of the club. The 18th Annual “A Taste of Pizza” will be 4:30-7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the St. Paul’s School Gym. There will be about 20 area eateries onsite and guests can pick five items (slices of pizza or desserts) for $6. Kids under 3 are free. ELO hydrant flushing continues

The East Liverpool City Water Department will continue to flush fire hydrants and blow offs throughout the city form 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. every weekday until completion resuming Monday. Flushing will finish in Upper Saint Clair Avenue area, Thompson Avenue area, Haywood area, Anderson Boulevard and Dixonville followed by outer Dresden Avenue and Pleasant Heights/LaCroft. Although customers may experience a discoloration in their water and low pressure due to the flushing of hydrants, the water is safe to use without boiling.

Wellsville Knitters to gather

Lepper book sale begins today

The Lisbon Library used book sale will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today and Saturday and from noon-4 p.m. Sunday. There will be a wide selection of books, audio books and movies selling for hardbacks $.50, paperbacks $.25, magazines $.10, videos $.25, audios and DVDs $1 and all children’s books $.25. Stitchers join JAF quilt show

Children’s choir forming in ELO

East Liverpool’s Got Talent is now accepting sign-ups for the newly formed ELGT Children’s Choir, a new program geared to get local children involved in music and the East Liverpool’s Got Talent annual Music and Arts Appreciation Festival. The choir will perform four times over the course of the year. All children in the East Liverpool and surrounding areas age 4 through high school can participate. The cost is $10 per child to cover the cost of concert T-shirts. Practices will be 2-4 p.m. every Saturday in the choir room of the HOYA building (formerly the East Liverpool Schools Administration Building). Walk for Life scheduled

The Wellsville High School yearbook staff will be sponsoring a New York red eye bus trip Dec. 11-13. Photography program offered

The Salem Library and the Salem Parks and Recreation Department are hosting a nature photography program 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Pavilion 2 in Centennial Park. Kirk Poffenberger from Design Studio in Salem will escort a group through Centennial Park with tips, secrets and hands on instruction on how to capture nature pictures. Participants will then be allowed two weeks to utilize their newly acquired photography skills to take and submit their favorite pictures. Some entries will make it into the Salem News but most will be used for a collage and will be displayed in the Salem Memorial Building. Oktoberfest set next weekend

The fifth annual Oktoberfest sponsored by the East Liverpool and Calcutta Rotary is set for noon-8 p.m. Sept. 26 at Thompson Park in East Liverpool. Again this year, vendors will be offering a variety of traditional Bavarian fare, a wide selection of German and seasonal beers and various wines. Children’s activities will include pony rides, pumpkin painting, carriage rides, face painting, train rides, a bounce house and a photo booth. Craft vendors will also be set up offering a variety of wares. “Our event has grown tremendously with each year, and we expect another amazing Oktoberfest for our community to enjoy with the whole family,” according to Rotarian David Bickerton.

ELO firefighters plan barbecue

An all-you-can eat barbecue will be sponsored by Local 24 of the International Association of Fire Fighters at 2 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Elks Lodge, 620 Broadway, East Liverpool. In its second year, the event will include food prepared by a professional barbecue caterer from Canfield. The $25 ticket price includes all-you-can-eat barbecue and beverage, as well as corn hole games and prizes. There will be a 50/50 drawing and music for the inside/outside event. Drug take-back day planned

Columbiana County Drug Take-Back Day will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 26 to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Area residents will have an opportunity to drop off their unused, unwanted or expired medications at either River Valley Health Partners, East Liverpool City Hospital Main Entrance; Salem City Hall, Salem; or Sparkle Market parking lot, Columbiana. Residents will remain in their cars and hand off the unwanted medications to local law enforcement officers, who will be the only staff handling the medications. No requests for identification will be asked. Unwanted capsules or tablets may be kept in their original containers or removed from the original container. Do not bring liquids, aerosols or creams. If an original container is disposed, try to remove any personal identifying information from the prescription label. If unable participate that day, you can dispose of your unwanted medications at several secure drop boxes located at the Columbiana, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Lisbon, Salem or Leetonia police departments, or the county sheriff’s office.

Back health program offered

Family medicine physician Jeffrey R. The Columbiana County Agricultural Society will hold its annual election of fair board directors from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the fairgrounds. Members of the Agricultural Society wishing to declare their candidacy for the office of director may do so by filing a petition with the secretary, signed by 12 or more members who are residents of Columbiana County, at least seven days before the election, which is Sept. 30. The public is invited to enjoy the sights of the 89th East Liverpool Dahlia Show hosted by the East Liverpool Dahlia and Floral Society. Liverpool still flushing hydrants

The East Liverpool City Water Department will be continuing to flush fire hydrants and blow offs throughout the city from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. every weekday until completion beginning Monday. Flushing will finish in East End and downtown moving on to lower Saint Clair and Northside areas then Upper Saint Clair Avenue area and Pleasant Heights/LaCroft taking 3-4 days in each area. Although customers may experience a discoloration in their water and low pressure, the water is safe to use.

Willard Road will be closed

Associated Pipeline Construction is advising motorists that Willard Road in Franklin Township will be closed at pipeline crossing for a period of two to three hours starting 9 a.m. today. The immediate area will remain accessible to local traffic, however expect delays of 15-20 minutes at the work zone. The closure is necessary in order to complete the installation of a new pipeline.

Free leaf bags available

Salem, Columbiana and Perry Township residents waiting for the leaves to drop can pick up free paper leaf bags from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Home Depot. A coupon for 20 free bags will be included with the October water and sewer bills as part of the annual bio-degradable leaf bag distribution sponsored by CCH Environmental, the waste district serving Carroll, Columbiana and Harrison counties. City Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst said leaf pickup dates for Salem will be announced at a later time. Bags left over will be provided to the municipalities for distribution to residents who couldn’t get to Home Depot on distribution day.

Lisbon Water Department customers on North Jefferson Street from East High to Jerome streets and on the south side of Jerome and Lee Avenue will experience an interruption in service at 9 a.m. today while crews fix a water leak and install a new valve. Ginter to speak at 9/11 ceremony

Senior driving refresher offered

As traffic rules and driving conditions change, even the most experienced drivers may benefit from refreshing their driving skills. Garden festival for kids slated

The East Liverpool-Calcutta Area Garden Club is sponsoring the second children’s garden festival 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Thompson Park. Pipeline work to affect Hull

Associated Pipeline Construction is advising motorists Hull Road will be closed at pipeline crossing for two to three hours starting 9 a.m. today. The immediate area will remain accessible to local traffic, however expect delays of 15-20 minutes at work zone. The closure is necessary in order to complete the installation of a new pipeline.

The East Palestine Area Historical Society is planning a cookout, covered dish picnic for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Log House Museum. The meeting will follow to prepare for upcoming Apple Butter Days and Car Cruise to be held Oct. 8-10.

Dinner to aid Walter Scholarship

KSU horticulture prof will speak

The Kent State-Salem library is kicking off its fall lecture series at noon Sept. 15 with the first of its free, brown-bag Prof Talks featuring John Majernik, program director of the horticulture technology program on the Salem Campus. Majernik will offer advice and tips on how to winterize surroundings in his talk, “Winter-Ready Horticulture.” He and other members of the horticulture faculty will share ideas and activities that can help protect the health of plants and trees as winter approaches.

Crop field day scheduled

The next local Crop Production Partnership field day will be held 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at the farm of Jim Skeels located at 6558 Gamble Road, Lisbon. Participants will tour part of the crop farm during a wagon ride to look at fields that were recently planted to cover crops after the wheat was harvested. District technicians will lead a hands-on session about measuring crop residue. An ODNR soil scientist will be at the farm to discuss soil health from soil pits dug on the farm. Dinner to help theater project

The Wellsville Sons of Italy Lodge will host a fundraising dinner to benefit the Liberty Theater Renovation Project from 4-7 p.m. Sept. 23. Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased by Sept. 18. The East Palestine Rotary Club is seeking vendors for its 10th annual Community Yard Sale scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 26 at the East Palestine Park. Senior driving refresher offered

As traffic rules and driving conditions change, even the most experienced drivers may benefit from refreshing their driving skills. Area residents age 50 and older can update their knowledge and learn safe driving techniques during the AARP Smart Driver Course, offered 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Salem Community Center. Designed specifically to meet the needs of mature drivers, the course covers topics such as defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, reducing driver distractions, effects of medications on driving and adjusting driving to accommodate age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Some course graduates may be eligible for discounted auto insurance rates. Fred Miller’s photography show, “A Rainy Day at the Rogers Sale,” will open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Gallery of the Mary Patterson Building of Kent State University. ELO library sets fall programs

Fall programming is getting ready to start at the East Liverpool Carnegie Library. Toddler time for children birth-3 years old will introduce toddlers and one caregiver to language with one half-hour of nursery rhymes, songs and stories once weekly for six weeks. Children must come with a caregiver who will stay with them. Program Times are 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Sessions begins Sept. 17 and sign-up starts Sept. 8. Preschool story time allows 3-6 year olds to interact with other children for 45 minutes of sharing books, songs and crafts once each week for six weeks. Children attend sessions alone. Bus trip to New York offered

Salem High School Choir Boosters and choral director Attila Samu are announcing a bus trip to New York City on Dec. 12. Those under 21 must be accompanied by an adult. The 54-seat deluxe charter bus will depart from the school at 11 p.m. Dec. 11. Arrival will be approximately 7 a.m. at the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Dental clinic to visit Southern

A free dental sealant program will be offered to second and sixth graders at Southern Local Elementary School next week as the St. Elizabeth Hospital Dental Clinic pays its biannual visit. A fully equipped mobile unit will be located outside the elementary school on Sept. 8, 10 and 18 and a dental hygienist will conduct screenings and treatment to help prevent tooth decay. Sealants will be checked next year with a new one applied, if needed. St. Elizabeth Hospital of Youngstown is providing the dental program and parents have signed and submitted forms for their child to participate. Library offers youth art class

Kids in grades 3-6 can go to the Columbiana Library for an Art of Picture Books art class. This six-week session will have classes from 3:30-4:30 p.m. every Thursday from Sept.17-Oct. 22. Instructor Christal Bonsall will introduce the process of several popular children’s illustrators and classes will include hands-on instruction on the different art methods. Vigil today at Lisbon police station

Along with the prayer vigil in support of police officers in the county at the Salem Police Department, there will also be one at noon today at the Lisbon Police Department. All denominations of churches and anyone wanting to pray for the police officers are welcome. There are other vigils planned across the country today as a symbol of support for the police.

ELO?trash pickup on schedule

Trash in East Liverpool will be collected Monday on its regular schedule despite the Labor Day holiday, according to deputy Service-Safety Director Bob Greathouse. There will be no interruption in trash service throughout the week. Since trash service is not always offered on holidays, Greathouse is asking that people inform their neighbors about the normal collection so everyone is prepared to have their trash collected Monday.

Snoopy helps library campaign

The Columbiana Library is partnering with the American Library Association during September to promote Library Card Sign-up Month. During the month of September, the library will hold weekly drawings in which Snoopy-themed items (notepads, candy bars and more) will be given away. The Salem Community Theatre Performing Arts Program will conduct its fall open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday to unveil an expanded line-up of dance and acting classes. Look good, feel even better

Women undergoing cancer treatment can learn techniques for looking and feeling their best during an upcoming session of the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better program. Salem Regional Medical Center will host the free class 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 30 in classrooms 3 and 4 on the hospital’s second floor. A trained volunteer cosmetologist helps women cope with appearance-related side effects of treatment by offering assistance with makeup application, skin care and hair and wig techniques. Light refreshments will be provided, and participants should bring a T-shirt of any color that can be cut for a special project. Boats on the lake Saturday

The Guilford Lake Civic Association will sponsor its annual Lighted Boat Parade and Fun Night on Saturday. The boats will start lining up at 8 p.m. at the public swim beach. The parade will move from the beach toward the east and the campgrounds and restaurants. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the beach for a bonfire. Guests should bring chairs, hot dogs, buns, drinks and snacks for their family and friends. The public is welcome. Anyone wanting to join the parade should decorate their boats with any type of lights, especially the left side which will be facing the shore.
