Energy improves at NBA All-Star Games

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama brought the energy from opening tip of the NBA All-Star Game, and it proved infectious. Some were crediting the 7-foot-5 San Antonio Spurs star for doing more to save the midseason showcase in mere minutes than anything the league has done in years. “It was a pretty good display of basketball,” Wembanyama said. “Better than last year, in my opinion. It was fun.” Wembanyama had been confident going in that setting the tone with competitive fire would make a difference in the league’s 75th annual showcase on Sunday at Intuit Dome, ...

What to know about Homeland Security shutdown

(AP) Another shutdown for parts of the federal government has begun as a fight over proposed restrictions on President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement agenda drags on. Funding for the Department of Homeland Security expired on Saturday. Democrats say they will not help approve more money until the new limits are placed on federal immigration operations after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minneapolis last month. The White House has been negotiating with the Democrats, but the two sides failed to reach a deal by the end of the week. That meant a lapse in ...

Quad flawed

MILAN (AP) — Ilia Malinin wound his way through the tunnels beneath the Milano Ice Skating Arena on Friday night, trying in vain to explain — or even just understand — exactly went wrong in an Olympic free skate that could only be described as a disaster. Out in the arena, Mikhail Shaidorov was taking a victory lap wearing the gold medal everyone expected the American to win. And playing over the loudspeakers: Coldplay’s song “Viva La Vida,” and the lyrics that begin, “I used to rule the world ...” In one of the biggest upsets in figure skating history, Malinin fell ...

County native makes Olympic debut for USA

MILAN (AP) — The U.S. goal song — “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd — blared seven times during over arena speakers on Thursday night. Twice, the celebration was only short-lived. Bouncing back from having a pair of goals wiped out by coach’s challenges, the U.S. opened the Olympics by rolling past Latvia 5-1 on Thursday night in a dominant showcase of some of the country’s best NHL players. Brock Nelson scored twice, four players had two assists apiece and there was production up and down the lineup. “We believe in the depth we have,” winger Jake Guentzel said. ...

The Face of Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Elroy Face, an All-Star reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates who saved three games in the 1960 World Series to help them upset the New York Yankees, died Thursday. He was 97. Team historian Jim Trdinich said the club was contacted by Face’s son, Elroy Jr., and informed the former pitcher died earlier in the day at an independent senior living facility outside Pittsburgh in North Versailles, Pennsylvania. Face was eight days shy of his 98th birthday. “It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Pirates Hall of Famer Elroy Face, a beloved ...
