Schedules don’t line up for women’s hockey team

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. women’s hockey gold medal-winning team has politely declined an invitation from President Donald Trump to attend his State of the Union address on Tuesday. “We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” the U.S. women’s team said in a statement released Monday. “Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate. They were ...

Mazeroski was much more than a World Series hero

PITTSBURGH (AP) —Bill Mazeroski, the Hall of Fame second baseman who won eight Gold Glove awards for his steady work in the field and the hearts of countless Pittsburgh Pirates fans for his historic walk-off home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, has died at the age of 89. Pirates owner Bob Nutting said “Maz was one of a kind, a true Pirates legend. ... His name will always be tied to the biggest home run in baseball history and the 1960 World Series championship, but I will remember him most for the person he was: humble, gracious and proud to be a Pirate.” Mazeroski ...

USA hockey needs no miracles this time

MILAN (AP) — Go ahead and put the names Jack Hughes and Connor Hellebuyck right in the same revered place that Mike Eruzione and Jim Craig have occupied since their “ Miracle On Ice ” triumph in 1980. It had been 46 years since the United States won the men’s hockey gold medal at an Olympics. This time, the country can thank Hughes, he of the lost teeth and the winning goal less than 2 minutes into overtime Sunday, for a 2-1 victory over Canada at the Milan Cortina Games, and Hellebuyck, he of the 41 saves, many of them spectacular. They will be remembered — and always ...

View since 1980

MILAN (AP) — Dave Christian got emotional throughout the Winter Olympics watching nephew Brock Nelson play for the U.S., just like he did during the magical run in 1980. Then it got even better: He got to congratulate Nelson after he became a gold medalist, just like him. “Fun to share this with him,” Nelson said after the U.S. beat Canada in overtime 46 years to the day of Christian and his teammates pulling off the “Miracle on Ice” by defeating the heavily favored Soviet Union on the way to gold in Lake Placid in upstate New York. Christian and Mike Eruzione, the ...

Hess embraces loser role

LIVIGNO, Italy (AP) — American freeskier Hunter Hess got to the end of his successful run in Olympic halfpipe qualifying, then leaned into the camera. He bent his left thumb and forefinger into the shape of an “L,” lifted it to his forehead and pointed at it with the other hand. “Apparently,” he explained, “I’m a loser.” The 27-year-old who received that label from U.S. President Donald Trump at the start of the Olympics — leading to threats to his family and setting off the first major political imbroglio of the Games — finally got in the starting gate Friday. ...

May be end of the line for toughest sport

TESERO, Italy (AP) — Nordic goodbye? It could be the last Olympics for a sport that mixes the grace of ski jumping with the grind of cross-country skiing. Nordic combined events at the Milan Cortina Games ended Thursday. And the International Olympic Committee is considering scrapping it from future Games because of a small TV audience and podium positions dominated by a tiny group of nations. As if to illustrate that point, Norway took gold in all three events — including Thursday’s men’s team sprint — and the same countries stood on the podium at all three Nordic ...
