Meanwhile, left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez and lights-out relievers limited the Americans to two hits through the seventh. Howard notches first tourney win

DAYTON (AP) — Bryce Harris had 19 points and 14 rebounds, and he sank a turnaround jumper with 13 seconds remaining that sent Howard to its first NCAA Tournament victory in program history, 86-83 over UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) in the First Four at the University of Dayton Arena on Tuesday night. Ose Okojie scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Bison (24-10), who entered with an 0-4 record in March Madness and had to hold off a late rally by the Retrievers (24-9). “We’ve done a lot of things in our program, but let’s check off the box of winning an ...

Texas survives late NC State rally

DAYTON (AP) — Tramon Mark hit a fadeaway jumper from just inside the 3-point line with 1.1 seconds left, and Texas survived a late rally to beat N.C. State 68-66 on Tuesday night in a First Four matchup of power-conference teams that limped into March Madness. Mark scored 17 points to lead the Longhorns (19-14), who had lost five of six entering the NCAA Tournament. Texas moved into the bracket as the No. 11 seed in the West region and will face sixth-seeded BYU on Thursday night in Portland, Oregon. Coach Sean Miller’s Longhorns led 62-53 on Chendall Weaver’s two free throws ...

Vitale, Barkley team up in Dayton

DAYTON (AP) — Dick Vitale previously declined a standing invitation from CBS and TNT Sports to call an NCAA Tournament game. An assist from Charles Barkley is finally making it happen this year. Vitale and Barkley will call tonight’s second First Four matchup in Dayton, Ohio, between Texas and N.C. State on truTV with Brian Anderson and Jenny Dell. It will be the second game this season that Vitale and Barkley have worked together, after the Indiana-Kentucky game in December. “This is happening because he (Barkley) worked a game on ESPN. Now I’m doing back the favor and ...

Michigan a good pick to win title

(AP) — There was a time when the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament was wildly unpredictable. Hard as it may seem to believe, there was one season where a No. 4 seed, two No. 5 seeds and a No. 9 seed all reached the Final Four. And a year later, a No. 11 seed got to the national semifinals as well. Ah, 2023 and 2024 feel so long ago. Last year’s tournament, for those who love upsets, was a complete and utter dud. Excluding the First Four games, teams seeded No. 11 through No. 16 went 3-24. The regional finals had three No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups, and the other was No. 1 ...
