Higgs making it big

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Harry Higgs was ready to quit golf, burned out by the mental beatings he gave himself, shortly before becoming what he believes was the last of the 156 players in the U.S. Open field. It was only Monday that he was added to the tournament as an alternate, so late that he never unpacked after arriving in New York. With his clothes still in his suitcase, he pulled the wrong item out Thursday morning, which is why he mistakenly showed up at Shinnecock Hills in shorts before a frantic wardrobe change allowed him to play. Good thing. The Big Rig is trucking into ...

World Cup feels like the Super Bowl

SEATTLE (AP) — Alex Freeman may not have one-upped his famous father yet, but he could be on his way. The son of Super Bowl champion wide receiver Antonio Freeman scored on a header for the United States in its 2-0 World Cup win over Australia on Friday. It was the third international goal for Freeman, the Americans' youngest starter at age 21. At this year's 48-team tournament, the U.S. has won consecutive games for the first time at a World Cup since 1930. The Americans have scored six goals, one off their record for most in a single World Cup, and received contributions ...

Guardians add to the injured list

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Cleveland outfielder Chase DeLauter has become the latest Guardians position player to go on the injured list. The team announced the move before Wednesday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The rookie fractured a rib on his right side Saturday when he collided with the outfield wall. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt expressed optimism that DeLauter could return after the required 10 days on the IL. "We just felt it was best with where he is injury-wise, let's give it 10 days so he can be 100% on the other end of the 10 days and be ready to go," Vogt ...

Windy start to U.S. Open expected

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The final day of practice for the U.S. Open brought a most unfamiliar sight Wednesday morning at Shinnecock Hills: The nine USGA flags atop the grandstand behind the 18th green, and the large American flag atop the century-old clubhouse, hung limply. Just not for ...
