Beverly leaps to state title

GENEVA — East Liverpool senior high jumper Cameron Beverly is making up for lost time.

After advancing to the state track meet as a sophomore and having his junior outdoor season wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic, Beverly captured a state title Friday.

Beverly won the Division II-III high jump title at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC) indoor state championship.

Beverly cleared 6-foot-4 at SPIRE Institute to top the field. Carrollton senior Talen Timberlake was second in (6-2).

The two high jumpers met on the basketball court on Jan. 19 with the Potters winning 76-61. Timberlake scored 16 points and Beverly 12 in the contest.

Beaver Local sophomore Caleb White was second in the 200-meter dash (22.87 seconds) and junior teammate Joe Monte was sixth (23.45). They also joined senior Dylan Moore and sophomore Zane Kinsey on the fifth-place 800 relay team (1:35.63). Monte added a fifth place in the long jump (19-feet-7 3/4).

Salem senior Lizzy Shontz was fourth in the girls shot put (37-11 3/4) a second straight year and added a fourth place in the weight throw (45-2).

Beaver Local junior Kodi Kinsey was fourth in the girls long jump (15-11 1/2) after finishing sixth last year. She also was 13th in the 60 dash (8.35) and 13th in the 200 dash (27.40).

Salem senior Carly Hall was sixth in the 1600 run (5:19.18).

South Range junior Jacob Brooks ninth in the boys shot put (46-6 1/4).

Also in the boys competition, Beaver Local senior Dylan Moore was 13th in the 400 dash (56.40), Beaver Local sophomore Zane Kinsey was 14th in the long jump (17-1 1/4) and 14th in 60 dash (7.42), Beaver Local sophomore Caleb White was 16th in 60 dash (7.43) and the Salem boys 3200 relay team was 16th (9:00.51).

The Division I indoor state meet will be held today.
