Geiss, Kersey headed back to Columbus

CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS — Heartland Christian senior Rebecca Geiss advanced to the state track meet for the fourth straight year, while Wellsville senior Clayten Kersey in making it two in a row. Both earned runner-up finishes at the Cuyahoga Heights Division V regional meet Thursday. Geiss was second in the girls 3200-meter run in a season-best time of 10 minutes, 54.77 seconds. Oak Glen stays alive in state tournament

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Oak Glen's softball team isn't ready to go home yet. The Golden Bears, the fifth seed, staved off elimination in the Class AA tournament with a 8-0 win over No. 6 seed Independence in six innings on Thursday evening at Little Creek Park. Oak Glen, the defending Class AA state champion, will now have to win four games today if it is to repeat. The task will be difficult. Potters, Beavers put themselves in good position

NEW CONCORD — East Liverpool senior Kailyn Kirby did not clear a height on Thursday in the Div. III regional girls high jump final at Muskingum University. Kirby was the only East Liverpool or Beaver Local athlete competing in a final on Thursday. East Liverpool's Meshach Harris (110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Loyd Hendershot (400) advanced out of the prelims to Saturday's finals. UNITY — No. 13 seed Bristol rallied for five runs in the seventh to force extras and scored two in the eighth to dump No. 9 Heartland 8-6 on Wednesday in a Div. VII district semifinal. Heartland led 6-1 going into the seventh and could not get out of trouble. In the eighth, an RBI double by Jonas Miller and a Kaden Garcia RBI single allowed the Panthers to take a two run lead. Southern’s Jones punches state ticket

AUSTINTOWN — Southern Local senior Maddy Jones qualified for the state track and field meet with a third-place showing in the shot put on Wednesday with a best throw of 38 feet, 6 1/2 inches at the Div. IV regional meet at Austintown Fitch. Jones hit that mark on her second throw. She fouled on the last three attempts.
