SALEM FOURTH
COLUMBUS -- Salem, which has survived two overtime games in the past three weeks, is on the way up in the latest Associated Press high school football state.
The Quakers (7-0) climbed six spots to a season-high fourth in the Division III poll. The Quakers let a 29-7 lead with less than four minutes left in regulation get away and beat Marlington, 36-29, in overtime Friday.
Salem travels to Howland this Friday.
Also in Division III, Youngstown Ursuline (5-2) is sixth, Cleveland Glenville (5-2) is sixth and Steubenville (5-2) is ninth. Ursuline beat Steubenville, 44-40, on Friday.
West Branch (6-1) dropped four more spots to 18th in Division IV. The Warriors play at Minerva on Friday.
Girard (7-0), which beat South Range 46-42 Friday, is tied for fifth in Division V and South Range (6-1) is fourth in Division VI.
Unbeatens Mineral Ridge (18th in Division VI) and McDonald (11th in Division VII) are heading for a Week 10 showdown.
Toronto (7-0) is seventh in Division VII, including wins over Southern, Oak Glen and Edison.
FIRESTONE TEST
AKRON – Host John Carroll won the 13-team Blue Streak Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at the Firestone Country Club’s North Course.
John Carroll shot rounds of 295-291-295 for a three-round total of 881, two strokes better than Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (California) and nine ahead of Transylvania (Kentucky).
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sophomore Selbi Aliaga, the defending NCAA Division III national champion, won his third straight tournament with a 3-under-par 69 in the final round. Aliaga has played 13 straight rounds of par or better.
The first 36 holes were played on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Mount Union finished 11th with a 934 (315-310-309).
Mount Union sophomore Jase Libb, a West Branch High School graduate, was 60th at 244 (84-80-80).
RAIDERS WRESTLING
ALLIANCE – The University of Mount Union has selected Sugey Ceja to lead its women’s wrestling program.
Ceja brings more than four years of collegiate coaching and recruiting experience to Mount Union, which enters its third season of women’s wrestling in 2026-27.
She served as an assistant women’s wrestling coach at Tiffin University since June 2024 after being an assistant coach at Lourdes University from 2022-24.
Ceja also serves as a coach with the Ohio Women’s National Team, preparing wrestlers for USA Wrestling national events.
As a student-athlete at Tiffin, Ceja was a two-time collegiate national finalist in 2020 and 2021 and a three-time All-American.
Area graduates on the Mount Union roster are sophomores Karlie Stith and Ilani Jones-Wallace of Salem, freshman Addison Paparella of East Palestine and freshman Abigail Mozden of Alliance.
