USC STAR ON TOP
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) -- USC star guard JuJu Watkins has been named the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year.
The senior was selected on Thursday by the conference’s coaches and a media panel.
Watkins missed last season recovering from knee surgery after being named Big Ten Player of the Year for the 2024-25 season.
She and Michigan forward Olivia Olson were unanimous picks by coaches on the preseason all-conference team.
Rounding out the first team were Illinois’ Berry Wallace, Iowa’s Ava Heiden, Maryland’s Oluchi Okananwa, Michigan’s Syla Swords, Nebraska’s Britt Prince, Ohio State’s Jaloni Cambridge, USC’s Jazzy Davidson and Washington’s Sayvia Sellers.
NEW FIELD
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) -- Northwestern coach David Braun has been looking forward to the first game at the new Ryan Field for a long time.
That moment has arrived.
The Wildcats host Penn State on Friday night for the highly anticipated debut of their $875 million stadium -- built on the same site as the former Ryan Field. The first game is being played on the 100th anniversary of the opening of the original Northwestern Stadium.
“This is transformational,” Braun said, “for the university and for the football program. It’s an honor to be in a position to lead and serve this program, and also a unique challenge in terms of making sure that myself, our staff and our players ultimately focus on the main thing, and that’s preparing for a very talented, very well-coached Penn State team.”
The new Ryan Field seats 35,000, down more than 12,000 from the school’s previous home. It’s the smallest stadium by capacity in the Big Ten.
It features a canopy designed to keep noise and light focused on the field and includes cutting-edge technology and scoreboards, as well as concessions with food from local restaurants.
ETIENNE OUT
METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- New Orleans Saints running back Travis Etienne Jr., one of the club’s top free-agent signings this year, is being placed on injured reserve, coach Kellen Moore announced Thursday.
The move means Etienne, who pulled a hamstring during the third quarter of Sunday’s 35-27 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, will miss a minimum of four games. His earliest possible return would come against the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 8.
Against the Raiders, Etienne had a season-high 19 carries for 57 yards when he pulled up lame along the right sideline at the end of a 16-yard run.
The Saints’ top remaining running backs are veteran Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and rookie CJ Donaldson, all of whom are expected to pay Monday night against Atlanta.
Kamara will be entering his third game since coming back from a training camp knee injury.
SURPRISE LEADERS
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) -- Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan, two golfers ranked outside the top 750 in the world, were the surprise co-leaders on 7-under par after the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Thursday.
For the No. 979-ranked Stewart, it was a particularly amazing feat to be ahead of so many of the world’s leading players.
The 36-year-old Scot was playing in a three-day event on his country’s development tour -- the Tartan Pro Tour -- up to Wednesday. That meant he had to forgo a practice round ahead of his step up to the European tour and a tournament that pairs professionals and amateurs from the celebrity and business world over three of Scotland’s top courses -- the Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
Playing at Carnoustie, Stewart birdied his third hole then made an eagle followed by four straight birdies on the back nine to complete a bogey-free 65.
Buchanan, an Australian ranked No. 788, played Kingsbarns and also was bogey-free, making seven birdies in his 65.
