Area golfers come up short of state

ALLIANCE -- Western Reserve senior Joey Thomas will be teeing off at the state golf tournament.
Thomas tied for second at the Division III boys district tournament Monday At Tannenhauf Golf Club.
He shot an 18-hole score of 79 to tie Smithville senior Owen Ward and Lake Center Christian senior Jacob Rainieri. All three earned state berths, but had a playoff for state seedings. Ward topped Thomas on the second playoff hole with a birdie.
Independence senior Kaden Schuette was the medalist with a 76.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 12-13 at NorthStar Golf Club north of Columbus.
Mogadore won the district title Mogadore with a 337, one stroke better than Independence. Jeromesville Hillsdale earned the third and final state berth with a 345.
Western Reserve was fifth (353), Columbiana sixth (360) and South Range 10th (374).
Among area golfers, Columbiana senior Trenton Hall tied for 15th (85), Columbiana senior Nick Klindworth and South Range senior Brennan Proya tied for 29th (91), Columbiana senior David Masters, Columbiana sophomore Luke Struharik and South Range freshman Nick Titus tied for 34th (92), Columbiana senior Geoffrey Malcomson, United senior Cole Crawford and South Range junior Mark Aey tied for 50th (95), South Range sophomore Thomas Mozzy tied for 66th (96) and South Range sophomore Braden Meshula tied for 59th (97).
There were 72 golfers in the field.
The Division II girls district golf tournament will be held today at Good Park in Akron.
Local golfers in the field are Columbiana’s Maddie Jackson, Claire Banner, Victoria Buckingham, Ashlynn Day and Nia Missos, along with Salem freshman Audrey Beck and United sophomore Claire Whetstone.
