Both Columbiana teams reach districts

SALEM -- The Columbiana boys and United senior Cole Crawford are playing into October.

The Clippers placed second out of 13 teams at the Division III sectional golf tournament Thursday at Salem Hills Golf & Country Club.

Columbiana shot a 343 to finish one stroke behind sectional champion Dalton. South Range was third (344) and Mogadore fourth (345). There were 10 strokes separating the top eight teams.

For the Clippers, senior Nick Klindworth and sophomore Luke Struharik tied for 11th (85), senior Trenton Hall was 14th (86), senior David Masters was 19th (87) and senior Geoffrey Malcomson was 31st (90).

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament Oct. 5 at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance.

Crawford placed sixth with an 83 for the fourth and final individual qualifying sport. Other individual qualifiers were Lake Center senior Jacob Rainieri, the medalist with a 3-over-par 75, and Lowellville sophomore Steven Yon and Springfield senior Cooper Ensley tied for fourth with 80s.

Other area teams in the field were Heartland Christian tied for fifth (351), United in ninth (354), Springfield in 11th (374), Wellsville in 12th (430) and East Palestine in 13th (436).

Among local golfers in the 75-player field were Heartland’s Jacob Vande Kappelle in 14th (86), Heartland’s Colt Conoaway 19th (87), United’s Adam Looman and Heartland’s Jack Morgan 22nd (88), Heartland’s Brady DeSantis 31st (90), United’s Brady Pierson 33rd (91), United’s Davin Ingold 37th (92), Heartland’s Brody Conaway 42nd (95), Wellsville’s Darnell Roe 43rd (96), United’s Logan Courtney 46th (97), Lisbon’s Mason Jones 53rd (100), East Palestine’s Shane Newsman and East Palestine’s Luke Kinkead 56th (107), East Palestine’s Clark Rutledge 59th (109), Wellsville’s Gage Vance 61st (109), East Palestine’s Rivers Figley and Southern’s Jensen Allender 63rd (114), Wellsville’s Maximus Crabtree and Southern’s Preston Pitts 65th (117), East Palestine’s Hunter Hupp 70th (122), Sebrings’ Connor Helmick 71st (124), Sebring’s Kamryn Garmier 72nd (125), Wellsville’s Ethan Corbin 73rd (128), Sebring’s Rick Zheng 74th (129) and Southern’s David Prendergast 75th (153).

CLIPPERS SECOND

HUBBARD -- The Columbiana girls along with Salem freshman Audrey Beck and United sophomore Claire Whetstone advanced from the Division II girls sectional golf tournament Thursday at Pine Lakes Golf Club.

The Clippers placed second out of 16 teams with a 347. Columbiana senior Maddie Jackson was second individually with an 18-hole score of 80, eight strokes behind Warren Champion sophomore Avery Robinette.

Also for the Clippers, senior Claire Banner was fifth (84), senior Victoria Buckingham 12th (89), sophomore Ashlynn Day 15th (94) and senior Nia Missos 28th (100).

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the district tournament Oct. 6 at Good Park in Akron.

Beck was 14th with a 93 and Whetstone was 16th with 95.

Whetstone won a three-way playoff with teammate Alaina Brewer and Ursuline’s Sophia Scianna for the final individual district berth.

The other two spots went to Maplewood junior Claire Urchek in fourth (82) and Jackson-Milton senior Abigail Hochendoner in 11th (91).

Joining Columbiana as qualifying teams are Warren Champion (341), Lakeview (373) and Bristol (386).U Heartland Christian was ninth (454) and Crestview 11th (496),

Among the local golfers in the 92-girl field were East Palestine’s Alivia Magness in 19th (96), Southern’s Rylee Digman 21st (97), United’s Jillian Dietrich 28th (100), Crestview’s Elaina Louk 32nd (101), Salem’s Kendal King and United’s Audrey Wilson 36th (102), Lisbon’s Noami Aeschacher, Heartland’s Selah Ciari and Southern’s Ava Reed 38th (103), Southern’s Kaitlyn Boston 43rd (105), Heartland’s Lila Hendershott 47th (106), Lisbon’s Kenly Weikart 51st (110), Crestview’s Ally Farley 52nd (111), United’s Ryhann Ferro 58th (114), Heartland’s Brooklyn Fronk 62nd (122), Heartland’s Emmerson Prus 63rd (123), Crestview’s Charlie Swegan 78th (136), Lisbon’s Olivia Fennema 80th (138), East Palestine’s Sydney Jurjavcic 85th (146), Crestview’s Tarynn McCowein 86th (148) and Crestview’s Joanna Wilhelm 90th (153).

The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team at districts advance to the state tournament at Firestone Golf Club in Akron on Oct. 11-12.

STEWART ADVANCES

CADIZ -- Beaver Local freshman standout Eli Stewart took second on Thursday at the Div. II boys sectional golf tournament at Cadiz Country Club.

Stewart had a 75 to take one of four district qualifier spots for individuals not on a district qualifying team.

St. Clairsville’s Mavrik Malin edged Stewart with a 74. The Red Devil team won the sectional with a 308. West Muskingum (336), Steubenville (341) and Martins Ferry (343) were the other district qualifying teams.

Beaver Local’s team finished seventh (350). Also for the Beavers, Andre Wiegand had a 85, Britton Hickman 95 and Nathan Pusateri 95.

East Liverpool took ninth with a 360. For the Potters, Garrett Cooper had an 88, Carstin Suznevich 89, Cooper Klein 91 and Kamdeyn Engle 92.

The other individual qualifiers not on a qualifying team were Barnesville’s Blaine Thompson (77), Harrison Central (78) and Union Local’s Landen Hanasky (81).

The district tournament is set for Monday at Eagle Sticks in Zanesville.
