Suburban League is Miller’s time

CANFIELD -- Times didn’t matter for East Liverpool senior Chris Miller on Tuesday.
Miller took runner-up honors at the Suburban League Cross Country Championships and, more importantly, beat Beaver Local senior and friend Luke Warrick for the first time.
“Not until today,” Miller said. “He kind of knew it.”
The meet was held at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm because the Canfield Fairgrounds across the street was much muddier.
McDonald sophomore Owen Cappuzzello topped the 198-runner boys field, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 42 seconds. He pulled away in the final mile.
Miller was second in 18:12 and Warrick was third in 18:20.
“It was muddy,” Miller said. “We knew it was going to be a tough one.”
Miller ran the course for the first time last week in the Suburban League regular-season finale. He finished 74 seconds behind Warrick.
“I learned about the course a lot,” Miller said.
Columbiana juniors Jace Zelonish and Eric Hepner finished 12th and 16th, respectively.
McDonald junior Naomi Sheesley won the Suburban League race for the third year in a row in 19:59. None of the other 168 girls finishers were under 21 minutes.
Columbiana junior Kaitlin Benner was 16th.
The McDonald girls had five of the top 15 runners to win a third straight team title with 34 points.
Howland repeated as the boys champion with 63 points. Columbiana was the highest area team in fifth place with 196 points.
Miller will run in the Malone Night Invitational on Saturday and then the Columbiana County Meet on Tuesday. The boys county race will be one to watch.
“I just want to get in the top five,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun race.”
