PIRATES OVER .500
CHICAGO (AP) -- Jared Jones pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, Oneil Cruz added a solo home run and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Thursday night to complete a three-game series sweep.
The White Sox had just two hits in losing for the eighth time in 11 games. Chicago’s AL Central lead over idle Cleveland slipped to 1 1/2 games.
Jones (4-6), making his 40th career start, allowed leadoff walks in the third and fourth innings and carried a no-hit bid into the seventh, when Colson Montgomery shut down the bid with a two-out double.
Jones finished the inning, matching his longest career outing, and finished with eight strikeouts. Luke Weaver worked a clean eighth and Mason Montgomery came on to record his 12th save for the Pirates, who’ve won four straight and nine of 11.
Cruz homered to deep center in the fourth off Erick Fedde (8-9) and tagged him for a second earned run when he singled to knock in Jared Triolo in the eighth.
MICHIGAN HAZING
DETROIT (AP) -- More than a dozen former hockey players are suing the University of Michigan, alleging their coach and other staff were aware of sexual hazing that included the forced shaving of their genitals and other abuse by teammates decades ago.
“The abuse was ritualized, meticulously planned, and sadistic. … Enduring sexual abuse was required to be a member of the Michigan Men’s Ice Hockey team,” attorney Michael Pitt said in a sex discrimination lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Detroit.
The plaintiffs are 16 men who played at Michigan between 1984 and 2001. The lawsuit apparently grew out of conversations among several former teammates in 2024.
The university said the allegations are “disturbing,” but denies responsibility.
The 72-page document describes players being forced to consume excessive amounts of alcohol and eat live fish. A common allegation: They were forced to have hair around their genitals shaved by teammates. A player identified as John Doe 7 said he was taunted with a blowtorch while on a table.
HARIMOTO WAS A HIT
TOKYO (AP) -- Isao Harimoto, the baseball great who survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb and still holds Japan’s hits record, has died. He was 86.
The Golden Players Club, an organization for elite baseball players, said Harimoto died on Wednesday without specifying the cause of death.
Harimoto started his professional baseball career in 1959 when he joined the then-Toei Flyers, who became the Nippon Ham Fighters. He was the first player in Japan to reach the milestone of 3,000 hits in 1980 and finished his career with 3,085. He was nicknamed “Hit Machine.”
Born to Korean parents in Hiroshima in 1940, Harimoto as a child overcame a series of difficulties.
At age four, severe burns in his right hand cost him most of its mobility.
Harimoto was five when he survived the U.S. atomic bombing of the western Japanese city on Aug. 6, 1945. His father died shortly after World War II and Harimoto’s hard-working mother ran an eatery to support the family.
Harimoto started playing baseball as an elementary schoolboy and learned to play left-handed. In middle school he aspired to be a professional player in the Nippon league to earn enough to give his mother a more comfortable life.
In his 23-year career, Harimoto was an 18-time All-Star who hit 504 home runs and played 2,752 games. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
