GIBSON WINS $10K
COLUMBUS -- Troy Gibson, a 2025 Salem High School graduate, kicked a 20-yard field goal during the Ohio State-Ball State game Saturday at Ohio Stadium to win $10,000.
Gibson was the kicker on the Quakers football team in high school and also played soccer.
X-TRA MILERS TO MEET

WARRIORS TAKE SALEM
SALEM -- West Branch defeated Salem 184-206 in a boys golf match Monday at Flying B Golf Course.
Karson Fusion led West Branch with a 42, followed by Ashton Clay with a 44, Dillion Hunston with a 48 and Bennet Biggs with a 50.
Salem was led by Donald Blackburn with a 47. Caden Arcuri shot 49, Audrey Beck 54 and Eli James 57.
Salem is 2-12 overall and 1-9 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference. The Quakers will compete in a quad match with Columbiana, East Palestine and Lisbon at 4 p.m. Monday at Salem Hills.
CLIPPERS GO TO 14-0
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana’s boys golf team improved to 14-0 with a 152-162 win over Springfield on Tuesday at Valley.
For the Clippers, David Masters had a 35, Nick Klindworth 37, Geoffrey Malcolmson 40 and Troy Fry 40.
The Clippers play in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday at Salem Hills.
CRESTVIEW BOUNCES WARRIORS
GLENMOOR -- Crestview defeated East Liverpool Christian 192-205 in a boys golf match Monday at Historic Highlands Golf Course.
Derek DuVall and Grant Snyder led Crestview with 44s, followed by Karl Wilhelm with a 50 and Logan Neff with a 54.
East Liverpool Christian was led by Noah Williams with a 43. Landon Kelly shot 54, Logan Bailes 57, Lucas Balser 51, Tristan Jones 61 and Thomas Walker 66.
STEELERS ROOKIE ROBBED
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh rookie offensive tackle Max Iheanachor, the Steelers ‘ first-round pick, had his home recently burglarized, according to multiple reports.
Reports said that at least $150,000 in merchandise was stolen on Aug. 26, the day before the Steelers visited Buffalo for a preseason game.
The Steelers took Iheanachor out of Arizona State with the 21st selection in this year’s NFL draft.
An undisclosed injury caused him to miss a big chunk of training camp. Iheanachor is listed second at right tackle on the Steelers’ depth chart for their season opener Sunday against Atlanta.
JIZZLE JAMES HAS ISSUE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Former NFL running back Edgerrin James posted a message on Instagram expressing concern and urging support for his college basketball-playing son Jizzle James, who he said is dealing with a substance abuse issue.
James wrote on social media that Jizzle “is not in the right state of mind right now. If you see him, show him love, but do not give him money, valuables, or anything material. You’re not helping him by feeding the problem. He wants/needs for nothing.”
“Give him a hug. Give him encouragement. Give him love. That’s it. Be patient with him,” James said. “We’re fighting for him, not against him.”
Jizzle James spent the last three seasons with Cincinnati but transferred earlier this offseason to Charlotte after head coach Wes Miller left the Bearcats and was hired by the 49ers.
A member of the Charlotte sports information staff confirmed James is no longer with the program.
Cincinnati dismissed James from the program last summer before he was brought back on the roster midway through the season. He played in 23 games last season averaging 10.9 points and 2.1 assists per game for the Bearcats.
24 TEAMS ON THE TABLE
IRVING, Texas (AP) -- The College Football Playoff announced Tuesday that it will open discussions with broadcast partner ESPN about potentially doubling the tournament to 24 teams.
“The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media rights discussion with ESPN,” the CFP said. “This does not represent a decision or commitment to expand, but rather an opportunity to engage with ESPN and gather additional information to help determine a path forward.”
The CFP deal that starts this season with ESPN is worth $7.8 billion over six seasons. That network would have first dibs on the first two games added to any package but the rest would be up for grabs. Fox has indicated it likes the 24-team idea, but embedded within that equation is the calculation of how much any broadcast partner would pay for a new set of games involving teams that might not garner the same ratings.
The CFP has been studying the impact of expanding the playoff from 12 to 16 or 24 teams for months amid concerns about venues, the overall college football schedule and the future of conference title games.
Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey has lobbied for 16 teams, while Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference leaders back a 24-team scenario that the Big Ten first put forward and still supports.
A 24-team playoff would eliminate automatic qualifiers and render conference title games -- whose estimated worth are some $200 million to the Power Four leagues -- virtually meaningless. But supporters say it would give all programs more access to the playoff.
The playoff expanded from four to 12 teams in 2024, but after executives failed to reach an expansion agreement, the CFP will use the same model for the 2026-27 season.
