GEISS WINS DEBUT
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Former Heartland Christian cross country standout Rebecca Geiss is used to running out front.
Geiss won her collegiate debut as the Palm Beach Atlantic freshman finished first in the Keyser Flagship Cross Country Invitational on Friday night.
Geiss finished the 3.1-mile course at South County Regional Park in 18 minutes, 0.27 seconds.
Freshman teammate Gianna Ritchie from Lake Center Christian in Hartville, Ohio, was second in 18:27.21.
There were 93 finishers.
The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish won going away with 25 points. Nova Southeastern was second with 56. Eight teams scored.
The Sailfish will run at the Florida State Pre-Regional on Sept. 18.
MOUNT DROPS OPENER
WHEATON, Illinois – The Mount Union football team lost its season opener for the first time in 39 years Saturday.
The third-ranked Purple Raiders had an extra point blocked with 22 seconds to play as fifth-ranked Wheaton held on for a 24-23 win in front of 3,227 fans at McCully Stadium.
Mount Union battled back from a 17-7 halftime deficit to close within one on Kayden Minner’s 1-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds to play.
The last time Mount Union lost a season opener was to Wooster, 17-15, in 1987.
Saturday’s loss also snapped Mount Union’s 85-game regular-season win streak.
Mount Union will host Grove City (Pa.) at Kehres Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
POLAND BEATS CHESTER
BOARDMAN -- Poland defeated the Chester Old-Timers 5-2 on Saturday in the Youngstown 50-Plus Baseball League playoffs. It forces a final game.
Chester was led by Joe Krause’s two hits. Kevin Ferell got the loss.
LOCALS COMPETE AT CLASSIC
WARREN -- Columbiana’s girls golf team finished seventh out of 12 schools on Saturday at the Mahoning Valley Girls Golf Classic at Avalon at Buhl Park.
For the Clippers, Maddie Jackson had an 87, Claire Banner 94, Ashlynn Day 96 and Victoria Buckingham 103.
Southern Local’s Rylee Digman had a 90 which was a school record for 18 holes for the Indians.
CLIPPER FROSH WIN
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana’s freshman volleyball teams beat Struthers 25-6, 25-4 and Campbell 25-9, 25-9 on Saturday.
Adelaide Garrett had 21 total points and 11 aces with four kills for the Clippers. Alaina Bailey added 20 points and 10 aces.
