PIRATES WIN WILD ONE
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Brandon Lowe scored from third when San Francisco third baseman Oseilvis Basabe short-hopped a throw to first with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Giants 13-12 on Tuesday night.
Lowe led off the ninth against Carson Seymour (0-1) with his fourth hit of the night, before eventually moving to third on a single by Nick Gonzales and a fielder’s choice by Oneil Cruz.
Pittsburgh backup catcher Rafael Flores Jr. then laced a hard grounder to third that Basabe picked cleanly, only to see his throw to first get away from first baseman Rafael Devers.
Lowe’s four-hit night included his 29th home run of the season. Cruz had four hits and drove in four runs for Pittsburgh, which recovered later after blowing a six-run lead.
The Pirates have won five of seven despite allowing the Giants to rally to tie it at 12 thanks to a five-run eighth, the final two runs scoring on Drew Cavanaugh’s double.
Gonzales had three hits for Pittsburgh to boost his batting average to .310. Spencer Horwitz and Jacob Gonzalez added two hits each for the Pirates.
Mason Montgomery (6-3) worked around two hits in the ninth to keep the game tied and put Pittsburgh in position to win it.
GUARDIANS IN RACE
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Gavin Williams struck out a career-high 13 and allowed just two singles in seven innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 6-1 win on Tuesday night over the Toronto Blue Jays in a matchup of teams in the thick of the AL wild-card race.
Patrick Bailey, rookie Angel Genao and Angel Martinez all hit two-run homers for the Guardians, who are 11-4 since Aug. 12. Cleveland came in with a slim lead for the third wild-card spot.
Williams (13-7) began September by dominating the Blue Jays, allowing one unearned run. The right-hander, who was coming off a shaky outing last week, didn’t give up a hit until the fourth.
Williams struck out the side in the seventh and fanned five of his last six. It was his 10th double-digit strikeout game this season.
Hunter Gaddis and Matt Festa pitched an inning apiece to finish the three-hitter.
Bailey put the Guardians up 2-1 in the fifth with his eighth homer. Martinez led off with a walk, and one out later, Bailey drove a 3-1 pitch from Spencer Arighetti (7-8) into the left-field bleachers.
Pinch-hitting for fellow rookie Travis Bazzana in the seventh, Genao made it 4-1 with a 426-foot blast over the wall in left. Martinez opened with a single before Genao connected for his second homer since debuting on Aug. 5.
Martinez hit his 14th homer in the eighth.
Toronto got some help in scoring its only run off Williams in the fifth.
Rookie Kazuma Okamoto singled and went to third when Guardians catcher Bailey threw wildly into center on a steal. Williams then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Okamoto to come home.
Blue Jays RHP Dylan Cease (9-5, 2.33 ERA) starts Wednesday against Guardians LHP Joey Cantillo (9-7, 3.70).
BIEBER RETURNS
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Shane Bieber’s homecoming at Progressive Field gave him all the warm and fuzzy feelings he had hoped. It was perfect -- except for one thing.
He didn’t get to pitch.
“I was definitely looking forward to that,” Bieber said Tuesday. “But it will happen. I trust it will happen at the right time.”
Bieber, who won the AL Cy Young while pitching for Cleveland in 2020, made his first trip back to face the Guardians since the club traded him to Toronto last season. The 31-year-old said it felt “odd” walking up the steps into the visitor’s dugout and he was certain that watching the game from the other side would be different.
But Bieber, who’s currently on the injured list with an elbow issue, was savoring the chance to catch up with former teammates, coaches and others. He spent nearly an hour on the field holding court behind the batting cage, sharing hugs, laughs and long embraces with friends he considers family.
“It’s a great place to come back to,” Bieber said. “It’s odd thinking that it’s only been a year and it’s odd to thinking that it’s already been a year. But I’m happy to be back. It’s been awesome. A lot of great memories and the support from 2018 to 2025 was very special and that I cherish.
