HANOVERTON -- United’s and Columbiana’s girls soccer teams took it to the limit on Monday in an OVAC Class 1-3A soccer semifinal.
Tied at 1-1 after regulation and two five-minute overtime periods, the Golden Eagles tallied a 5-4 penalty kick win to earn a spot in Saturday’s final.
United keeper Cheyenne Chuck saved Columbiana’s fourth shot and Heather Shipley converted United’s final shot to preserve the win for the Eagles.
United’s Hailey Chuck scored in regulation on an assist from Charlie Koons. Josie Hepler tied the game for the Clippers. Cheyenne Chuck had four saves in goal, while a busy Kyla Hogan had 17 saves for Columbiana.
Bella Thompson, Mary Marhefka, Chuck and Maddy Figley converted penalty kicks for the Eagles.
Columbiana’s Josie Hepler scored the first goal on a breakaway on the Clippers’ first shot 9 minutes and 7 seconds in to the match.
United controlled most of the first half, but couldn’t score until Hailey Chuck’s goal with one second left in the half to tie the score at 1-1.
Hogan kept Columbiana in the match with a number of saves in the first half as Thompson and Delaney Jones kept firing at the net.
The match stayed 1-1 until the shootout.
United (9-1-1) will play Wheeling Central Catholic (13-1) at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Wheeling Island Stadium. Wheeling Central defeated Steubenville, 5-3, in the season opener.
BEAVER LOCAL 4, STEUBENVILLE 3
CALCUTTA -- Beaver Local’s girls soccer team came back from a two goal deficit to defeat Steubenville 4-3 in an OVAC Class 5A semifinal on Monday.
Jaylin Crites scored with 22:11 left in the first half and Lucy Saccoccia added another with 11:07 left in the first half to push Big Red up 2-0.
Riley Springer assisted Peyton Dunn at the 8:26 mark of the first half then Dunn converted a penalty two minutes later to tie the game. A Kenzy Petrelle penalty kick with 40 seconds left in the half put Big Red up at the break following a Dunn missed penalty kick with 22 seconds left.
A nifty turnaround shot by Dunn with 23:41 left in the game tied the game. Leah Stewart supplied the game-winner with 3:21 left for the Beavers and also had an assist earlier in the game.
Tatum Duncan had five saves in goal.
Top-seeded Beaver Local will play No. 2 seed University at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the final at St. Clairsville. University was a 5-4 winner of Wheeling Park on Monday.
WEST BRANCH 10, URSULINE 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Nine different players scored in West Branch’s 10-0 girls soccer win over Ursuline on Monday.
For the Warriors, Caidee Schroeder led the way with two goals. Hailie Singer, Cambrie Nezbeth, Ellie Tucker, Hensley Biery, Elli Colian, Emma Klingensmith, Brianna Clark and Alinee Bacconi all had goals for the Warriors. Tucker had two assists with Sanor, Biery and Klingensmith each having an assist.
It was West Branch’s fifth straight shutout. The Warriors (10-0) host Alliance on Wednesday.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE 6, OAK GLEN 5
ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- St. Clairsville’s girls soccer team bested Oak Glen 6-5 in double overtime on Monday in an OVAC Class 4A semifinal.
Kendall Krzys had two goals and two assists for the Bears. Bailey Watts added two goals and an assist. Chloe Thompson had a goal. Angelina Polly had two assists.
St. Clairsville will play Linsly in the final at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Weir High.
Oak Glen falls to 8-5. The Golden Bears will travel to Cambridge in a consolation game later this week.
COLUMBIANA 5, NEWTON FALLS 1
NEWTON FALLS -- Columbiana’s boys soccer team fell 5-1 against Newton Falls on Monday.
The Clippers are 7-3-1 and will host Steubenville Central today in an OVAC Class 1A-3A semifinal.
