HANOVERTON -- The Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball title chase is a battle at the top.
United handed East Palestine its first league loss with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-16 sweep Thursday.
Leaders for the Eagles were Maelee Smith with 12 kills and two aces, Rileah Phillips with 15 service points with five aces and 16 assists and Sophie Battaglini with 12 service points and 11 digs.
United improves to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the EOAC. East Palestine moves to 8-3 and 5-1 in league play. Columbiana is 5-0 in the EOAC and will play at East Palestine on Tuesday.
Destiney Burtyk had 13 kills and 24 digs for the Bulldogs. Marley Blythe added 10 points, six kills and 16 digs; Kennedy Andre 23 assists, 13 digs and three aces; Cadence Vargo nine digs and three kills; and Violet Glavan five points, four kills and four digs.
East Palestine won the junior varsity match, 25-22, 25-23.
For the Bulldogs, Aubrey Oltmann had 10 points, seven aces and four kills, Aliviana Valingo five kills and six digs and Delaney Demster four points and 11 digs.
Topping United were Adrianna Zane-Beadnell with eight points, five aces and 13 digs, Cora Baker 15 assists and two aces and Aubrey Danko seven kills.
United is scheduled to host Poland on Monday.
WELLSVILLE 3, LISBON 2
WELLSVILLE -- Wellsville and Lisbon played into Thursday night.
Wellsville prevailed with a 16-25, 25-16, 26-28, 25-21, 15-13 win in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play. It was close throughout with the Tigers totaling 107 points and the Blue Devils 103.
Wellsville improves to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the EOAC, while Lisbon drops to 3-7 and 1-4 in league play.
Leaders for Lisbon were Brigett Newbold with six points, 11 assists and five digs; Ella Cochran eight points, two aces, 24 assists and five digs; Addy Anderson nine kills, seven points, three aces and five digs; Alayna Householder six kills and five points; Gionna Lenigar 11 kills, five points, two aces and three blocks; Lilly Lipply 10 kills, six points, three aces and two blocks; and Hannah Davis 11 digs.
Wellsville hosts Bridgeport on Monday and Lisbon travels too United on Tuesday.
SOUTHERN 3, VALLEY 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kalayah Crute collected 18 points with five aces and seven kills in leading Southern past Valley Christian, 25-12, 25-16, 25-12, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Thursday.
The Indians improve to 3-5, while the Eagles drop to 0-8.
Delaney Beadnell contributed 11 points and 10 assists, Natalia Lopez eight points and six kills, Katie Kellogg six points and seven kills, Kiah Sloan six kills, Addy Martin six points and three digs and Eliana Forbes eight assists and three digs.
Southern also won the junior varsity match, 25-6, 25-5, with Eliana Forbes serving 12 points and Gemma Jackson 10 points.
Southern will play at Edison at 11 a.m. Saturday.
CRESTVIEW 3, NEWTON FALLS 2
NEWTON FALLS -- For the second night in a row, Crestview emerged a winner in the deciding fifth game.
The Rebels defeated Newton Falls, 25-11, 13-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-6, Thursday.
They improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Gray Tier heading into Tuesday’s match at Champion.
Sophia Noling had 11 kills, Phiatra Bradley nine and Madi Kyser eight for the Rebels. Sarah Hively added six kills and three blocks, Addison Wendell 23 assists, three aces and 11 digs, Kerrigan Miller four aces, four assists and 20 digs, and Cambriana Davidson 12 assists and two aces.
Crestview also won the junior varsity match, 25-16, 25-15, as Claire Crable had three aces and 16 assists and Tori Griffith four kills.
The Rebels made it a sweep by winning the freshman match, 25-7, 25-9. For the Rebels, Sydnee Erin had 11 points, four aces and six digs, Ansley Headland 10 points and three aces and Lauren Gaydos two aces and 15 assists.
