SALEM EARLY BIRD
SALEM -- The 24th annual Salem Early Bird Cross Country Invitational will be held Saturday at Waterworth Memorial Park.
Eighteen high school are entered, including the boys and girls teams from host Salem, Crestview, Lisbon, South Range, Southern Local, Springfield, United, West Branch, Alliance, Howland, Lake Center Christian, Lowellville, Niles, Poland, Ravenna, Youngstown Ursuline along with the boys teams from East Liverpool and Louisville.
Entries include 176 high school boys, 130 high school girls, 124 middle school boys and 124 middle school girls, making it one of the larger meets in recent history
There will be a 500-meter run for grades K-6 at 8 a.m. Races start at 9 a.m. with the middle school boys, followed by the middle school girls at 9:45 a.m., high school boys at 10:30 a.m. and high school girls at 11:15 a.m.
Minerva swept the girls and boys titles last year, but the Lions will be at the Canton GlenOak Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday.
HALL GAINS 200TH WIN
COLUMBIANA -- The Clippers remained unbeaten and coach Bob Hall earned his 200th career victory as Columbiana’s boys golf team defeated Hubbard 150-164 on Thursday at Valley Golf Club.
Trenton Hall led Columbiana with a 34. Nick Klindworth and David Masters each shot 38, while Luke Struharik carded a 40.
Hall has spent six seasons coaching at East Palestine and nine at Columbiana.
Columbiana improved to 11-0 on the season. The Clippers will travel to Stambaugh Golf Course on Monday to face Cardinal Mooney.
CAR ENDS UP ON CC COURSE
CONNORVILLE -- A car rolled onto the course during the Ohio Valley Cross Country League meet junior high boys race on Wednesday at Buckeye Local.
A westbound vehicle was forced off State Highway 150 by an eastbound truck and traveled down an embankment onto the course. No participants, spectators nor workers were injured. The race was briefly halted while the car was directed through the grass into the Buckeye Local High School parking lot before returning to the roadway.
MINERVA WINS QUAD
MINERVA -- Minerva’s girls golf team bested United, Crestview and Heartland on Thursday at Edgewater.
Minerva is 15-0.
Peyton Beaumariage tied the school record for nine holes with a 32. Emery Sell added a 36. Delaney Sell had a 45 and Savanna Bartley had a 47.
For United (181), Alaina Brewer had a 41, Claire Whetstone 43, Jillian Dietrich 48 and Audrey Wilson 49.
For Crestview (218), Elaina Louk had a 44, Ally Farley 46, Charlie Swegan 61 and Tarynn McCowin 67.
For Heartland (220), Lila Hendershott had a 48, Selah Ciardi 52, Emmerson Prus 58 and Brooklyn Fronk 62.
BEAVERS ROLL CREEK
CALCUTTA -- Beaver Local defeated Indian Creek 134-163 in a boys golf match Thursday at Beaver Meadows.
Eli Stewart and Brady McNear shared medalist honors with matching 33s. Britton Hickman and Andre Wiegand each shot 34, while Nathan Pusateri and Austin Pickering each carded a 40.
Beaver Local improved to 7-2 on the season. The Beavers will face Indian Creek and Steubenville on Monday at Steubenville Country Club.
CLIPPERS BATTLE IRISH
YOUNGSTOWN -- Columbiana defeated Ursuline 178-198 in a girls golf match Wednesday at Stambaugh Golf Course.
Claire Banner led the Clippers with a 40, followed by Maddie Jackson with a 41, Victoria Buckingham 46 and Nia Missos 51.
Ursuline was led by Sophia Scianna with a 46. Clara Miller shot 47, Aviana Li 50 and James Ronci 53.
Columbiana improved to 8-2 on the season.
