WELLSVILLE -- Wellsville is looking toward a former East Liverpool standout athlete to lead its athletic programs.
Howard Williams was approved as the school district’s new athletic director on Monday at the Wellsville Board of Education meeting.
The 2021 East Liverpool High School graduate was a strong defensive player in the secondary for the Potter football team and a three-time state tournament qualifier in wrestling.
He started his collegiate football career at Youngstown State before transferring to NCAA Div. II Fairmont State. At Fairmont, he played two seasons including all 11 games as a defensive back in the 2024 season. During that campaign he had 65 tackles and led the team with four interceptions.
His brother Eric is a member of the Wake Forest University football team after having played all 13 games at Toledo in 2025.
Howard Williams had just resigned this week as a high school math teacher, wrestling coach and assistant football coach at East Liverpool.
Former Wellsville athletic directory Kyle Exline was hired as the district’s superintendent at the beginning of July.
