MEET THE PENGUINS
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University football fans are invited to “Meet the Penguins” from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Watson & Tressel Training Site (WATTS).
Fans can get autographs, phots and interact with players during the free events.
They can also try on a YSU uniform, kick field goals, time a 40-yard dash, enjoy inflatables and toss footballs around with members of the team and the coaching staff. Pete and Penny the Penguin and members of the YSU spirit squad will be in attendance.
The YSU Bookstore will be selling Penguins merchandise.
Parking will be available in the M-81 Lot.
POTTERS WIN OPENING MATCH
EAST LIVERPOOL -- East Liverpool’s boys golf team scored a 195-212 win over Edison on Wednesday in the season opener at East Liverpool Country Club.
Kam Engle led the Potters with a 43. Cooper Klein and Donovan Shallcross had 49s while Carstin Suznevich added a 54.
Xander Haught had a 47 for the Wildcats.
East Liverpool is at the Brookfield Invitational on Aug. 5.
COLUMBIANA CLAIMS OPENER
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana girls golf team opened the new season with a 187-196 win over Beaver Local on Wednesday at Valley Golf Club.
For the Clippers, Claire Banner had a 41, Maddie Jackson 42, Victoria Buckingham 48 and Mya Fisk 56.
For the Beavers, McKenzie Ash had a 47, Brenna Jones 48, Mya Anderson 48 and Carlee Crabtree 53.
Columbiana is scheduled to play Southeast today at Salem Hills.
WEST BRANCH DOWNS UNITED
BELOIT -- Emma McLaughlin shot a 43 to lead West Branch’s girls golf team to a 198-217 win over United on Wednesday at Westville Lake.
Isabella Linger added a 45, while Katelyn Schank added a 54 and Brylee Moore 56 for the Warriors.
West Branch hosts Minerva on Friday.
United plays at the Minerva Invitational today at Great Trail.
PIRATES FOILED AT HOME
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Eduardo Rodríguez pitched eight shutout innings, Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Wednesday, clinching the three-game series.
Arizona (57-52) now sits two games up on the Pirates (55-54) for the final NL wild card.
Rodríguez (10-3) struck out two while giving up five hits on 105 pitches before Brandyn Garcia closed out a hitless ninth inning for his second save of the year.
The loss marked the fifth straight against a left-handed opener for Pittsburgh, while Diamondbacks starters gave up zero earned runs in 20 2/3 innings pitched this series.
Moreno scored the game’s first runs, smashing a slider 407 feet into the lawn past the center-field wall. With the hit, he extended his on-base streak to 26 consecutive games.
Max Kepler drove in the only other score with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Despite three consecutive three-up, three-down innings to start the game, Jared Jones (2-2) surrendered all three runs and struck out five in six innings for the Pirates.
The Pirates have been shut out in three of their last seven games. They lost 2-0 to the Yankees a week ago and 11-0 to the Cubs on Saturday.
SALEM X-TRA MILE CLUB
SALEM -- The Salem X-Tra Mile Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the girls locker room at Sebo Stadium.
The club will recap its Salem Star Trax 5K Night Run, which will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday at Sebo Stadium, and start planning for the 24th annual Salem Early Bird Cross Country Invitational.
BLUE JACKETS CUT RADIO BROADCASTS
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets cut their longtime radio play-by-play man Bob McElligott on Wednesday as the team said it plans to simulcast its TV broadcast on the radio.
McElligott called Blue Jackets games for 17 years.
OHIO RIVER CATFISH TOURNAMENT
CHESTER, W.Va. -- The next Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club Ohio River catfish tournament is slated for Aug 15. Fishing starts at 7 p.m. Sign up at Chaney’s Sunoco in Chester. All fish must be measured at the Chester City Park Marina. Anyone who registered for July’s canceled tournament may use last month’s entry fee to register or may request a refund. All new registrations are $10 per fisherman.
SPORTMEN CLUB TO MEET
CHESTER, W.Va. -- The Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. New members must put in an application then join at the next meeting upon approval.
