NEW CONCORD — East Liverpool senior Maddox Roach gave everything he had in his best event.

Roach was first in the 1600-meter run at the Division III regional track and field meet Saturday at Muskingum University.

He ran a season-best time of 4 minutes, 15.42 seconds, to win by 2 1/2 seconds.

Minerva senior Rowen Hoffee finished fourth (a season-best 4:20.72).

Roach was seventh and Hoffee 13th at the state meet last year.

The top five finishers in each event advance to the Division III state track and field meet June 5-6 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

The Beaver Local boys advanced six athletes in five events.

Beaver Local junior Landon Wheatley leads the charge as he was second in the high jump (6-foot-4) and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (a personal-best 39.76 seconds).

Defending state champion Aidan Mahon of Philo won the high jump (6-4). He had no misses until 6-5, while Wheatley had two. Wheatley was sixth at state last year.

The Beavers’ 1600 relay team of Zachary Redman, Luke Rettos, Nolan Irving, Luke Warrick was fourth (a season-best 3:24.96).

Beaver Local also had two at-large qualifiers, junior Luke Warrick was sixth in the 800 run (a school-record 1:55.29) and the 400 relay team of Richie Wyse, Rettos, Irving and Redman was sixth (a season-best 43.60).
