AUSTINTOWN — The Salem girls are lined up for a state run.
The Quakers captured their second regional team title in three years with an impressive performance at Falcon Stadium Saturday.
The Salem girls qualified 12 girls in 10 events for the Division III state track and field meet June 5-6 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
Salem scored 81 1/2 points at the Austintown Division III regional meet that wrapped up Saturday to outdistance second-place Akron Buchtel, which had 54 points.
Freshman Chaya Murray won the 200-meter dash, breaking her school record in 24.64 seconds. She also joined Abby Knickerbocker, Laura Hovorka and Karlie Sampson on the second-place 1600 relay team (4:05.68) and Angie Hoffaker, Knickerbocker and Sampson on the third-place 400 relay team (a school-record 49.40 seconds).
Other individual quarriers were Knickerbocker third in the 400 dash (a personal-best 58.46); Hovorka third in the 800 run (a personal-best 2:20.83); Hopple fifth in the 800 run (a personal-best 2:22.79); and Sampson fifth in the long jump (16-5 3/4),
On Thursday, Salem high jumpers Madolyn Gorby and Peyton Colbert advanced as did shot putters Macey Troy and Maddy Andres, Hopple in the 3200 run and the 3200-relay team of Emily Sinsley, Sarah Sinsley, Hopple and Hovorka.
The top five finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
The Salem boys are sending three athletes in four events to state.
Senior Lucas Adams was second in the high jump (6-4) and senior Hunter Owen was fifth in the shot put (50-9 1/2) on Saturday.
Adams also was second in the long jump Thursday and freshman Colt Stockman was fourth in the discus.
