United 9, Columbiana 2

COLUMBIANA — The United softball team ended a long streak and is hoping to start one of its own.

Freshman Madison Aegerter tossed a three-hitter as United beat Columbiana, 9-2, Monday to end the Clippers’ 56-game Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference winning streak and clinch the Eagles’ first league title since 2004.

“I’m very happy we did that,” United coach Jen Koons said. “They have been the best team in the league for the last four or five years or longer. They are a really strong program with really strong players.”

Aegerter gave up two earned runs with 10 strikeouts and one walk. The first six Clipper outs were strikeouts. Aegerter also had an RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

“Madison was slinging today,” Koons said. “She threw hard and really well today. That made things a little easier for our defense.”

The top of the order also delivered for the Eagles with hitters 1-4 collecting seven of their eight hits.

Chloe Angelo had two hits, including a home run, with two runs scored and two RBIs. Callie Koons went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Josie Wargo added two hits.

It was United’s first win over Columbiana since 2018, snapping a 14-game losing streak to the Clippers. Columbiana was 17-1-1 over the previous 19 games against United dating back to 2012.

“They definitely knew it had been a long time,” Jen Koons said.

United is 14-5 overall and clinched a share of the league title at 11-0. Columbiana drops to 12-5 and 10-1 in league play.

Columbiana still has a chance to claim a share of its sixth straight EOAC title with a win at United on Wednesday. The Clippers last EOAC loss before Monday was to Lisbon in 2021, when the teams shared the league title.

United took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning. Wargo hit the first pitch up the middle for a single and Brittany Miller reached base on an infield throwing error.

Caitlyn Roller and Jillian Dietrich followed with fielder’s choices to each drive in a run for a 2-0 lead that held up.

Brooke McKim doubled and scored a run for the Clippers.

Ella Eisenbraun took the loss, giving up three earned runs in seven innings. She struck out seven and walked two.

Both pitchers threw 111 pitches.

United can clinch sole possession of the EOAC title with another win over Columbiana on Wednesday.

“We talked about it,” Jen Koons said. “We kind of let them enjoy it today. They worked so hard in the season and offseason.”
