AUSTINTOWN — Salem junior Madolyn Gorby already wrapped up another state berth. She had to wait to see if junior teammate Peyton Colbert would join her in Columbus again.

“It was nerve-wracking because she wasn’t doing that well,” Gorby said.

Gorby won the regional title, while Colbert won a jump-off for the fifth and final state berth at the Austintown Division III regional meet Thursday.

The top five finishers in each event advance to the Division III state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus on June 5-6.

Gorby cleared 5-foot-3 with only two other jumpers getting over 5 foot.

“I was very nervous,” she said. “I expect to do better all the time.”

She is a three-time state qualifier who finished sixth last year.

“I jumped 5-4 last year, so at the state meet I want to jump 5-5,” Gorby said.

The real drama was for the final state berth with Colbert and Cloverleaf junior Abby Reinhardt in a jump-off.

Colbert had never been in a jump-off before and said she didn’t know how it worked.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “It was nerve-wracking and I was nervous.”

Both jumpers missed their only attempt at 5-0, so they waited until the end of the competition to finish it.

“I just wanted to focus and lock in,” Colbert said.

Colbert made her first attempt at 4-11 with room to spare. Then Reinhardt missed, giving Colbert the state berth.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “I was scared.”

Colbert also went to state last year, but didn’t clear the opening height of 5-2. But it was a learning experience.

“Don’t over think,” she said. “Go in there like I do in practice.”

They won’t be alone at state. The Quakers qualified 10 athletes in six events Thursday with more to come Saturday.

Salem freshman Addison Hopple advanced in two events.

She was fifth in the 3200 run in a personal-best 11:19.00 and joined senior Laura Hovorka and junior twins Emily Sinsley and Sarah Sinsley on the fourth-place 3200 relay team (9:48.91).

State qualifiers in the girls shot put are Salem junior Macey Troy in second place (35-9 1/4), West Branch senior Idonika Woods in third (35-4 1/4) and Salem senior Maddy Andres in fifth (34-11 1/4).

For the Salem boys, senior Lucas Adams was second in the long jump (22-0 1/4) and freshman Colt Stockman was fourth in the discus (156-6).

Adams had battle with Glenville senior Jay’vier Kery in a matchup of two indoor state champions.

Kerr, the Division III indoor champion, had a winning jump of 22-3 1/4. He added a 22-1 3/4.

Adams, the Division II indoor champion had the next four best jumps. He totaled seven jumps over 21 feet.

Meet notes

• The Salem boys 3200 relay team of Cooper Barth, Alex Rea, Colton Hall and Sam Yakubek finished eighth in 8:17.20. The Quakers won the district title last week with a slower time and missed a state berth by eight seconds.

• Salem freshman Chaya Murray false-started in her first regional race. She flinched before the gun went off in the girls 100 dash semifinals.

Murray came back in the 200 dash, posting the top time of 24.81 seconds. That broke her school record of 24.82 set winning the Austintown district title last Saturday.

• The top two in each heat from Thursday’s preliminaries and the next four fastest times advance to the finals.

• The Division III regional meet concludes Saturday with the remaining field events at 11 a.m. and the running finals at 12:30 p.m.

• Austintown Fitch will host the Division IV regional finals today beginning at 4:30 p.m.
