Quakers throw weight around at state

HILLIARD — The Salem weight events are not only shining at the high school level, but also in junior high.

Salem eighth-grader Annaleigh Jones-Harris was fifth in the discus and eighth-grader Audrey Beck was seventh in the shot put at the OHSAA 7th and 8th Grade State Track and Field Meet on Saturday.

Minerva eighth-grader Vivian Watts was fourth in both events — the shot put (40-feet-9 1/2) and discus (102-8) — at Hilliard Darby High School.

Jones-Harris was fifth in the discus (99-5). In the shot put, Beck was seventh (36-3 1/2) and Salem eighth-grader Gracee Owen was 11th (34-8 1/2).

The event winners posted the top middle school marks in Ohio this season — Hilliard Heritage eighth-grader Courtney Holman in the shot put (47-8 1/2) and Maysville eighth-grader Layla Williams in the discus (117-10).

The meet was split into two divisions based on location. All of the local schools competed in Division A, which included the Northeast, East and Central athletic districts. Division B included the Northwest, Southeast and Southwest athletic districts.

East Liverpool seventh-grader Mya Wright was seventh in the girls 200-meter hurdles (30.05 seconds) and East Liverpool eighth-grader Mar’keim Abercrombie was ninth in the boys shot put (45-3 3/4).

The South Range boys had two high finishes in the relays.

The Raiders’ 1600 relay team of Lincoln Slagle, Weston Ramps, Sam Freedy and Harley Booms was second (3:38.39), trailing only Columbus Minerva Park (3:38.05).

The Raiders’ 3200 relay team of Harley Booms, Weston Ramps, Ryan Fieldhouse, Sam Freedy finished third (8:56.04).

Beaver Local’s 1600 relay team of Cal Irving, Michael Luna, Bentley Roe-Gonzalez, Michael Volino was 11th (3:50.09).

Other girls competitors included United seventh-grader Aybree Maines, 15th in the 400 dash (62.82); Salem eighth-grader Layla Hewitt, no height in the high jump; Minerva seventh-grader Diem Simmons, 14th in the long jump (15-0 1/2); and the Minerva 3200 relay team of Presley Tarbet, Alexis Oberly, Hannah Gram and Callie Mutigli was13th (10:20.01).
