Quakers cage Wildcats

Salem 13, Struthers 1

SALEM — Leadoff hitter Olivia Lewis got the Salem softball team going early.

Lewis scored a run in the first inning and 20th-seeded Salem slugged 29th-seeded Struthers, 13-1, in five innings in a Division IV sectional final Friday.

Olivia Lewis went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three runs at Southeast Field.

She singled on the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning, went to second base on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on Aniya Jones’ sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Sister Emilee Lewis doubled, singled and scored two runs. Morgan Colian hit a two-run double and Jones had three RBIs. Shae Burkhart also scored two runs.

Morgane Blaine was the winning pitcher, giving up an unearned run on four hits in five innings. She struck out nine and walked two.

Salem has won three of its last four to improve to 8-13. Salem will play at second-seeded Lakeview at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Northeast 8 champion Lakeview is 20-5 with the five losses coming by a combined eight runs.

The Quakers scored four runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Emilee Lewis opened with a single over the third baseman’s head and scored after a throwing error on Shae Burkhart’s grounder.

Morgan Colian belted a deep drive to center field for a double that scored Burkhart. Blaine was hit by a pitch and a fielding error on Jones’ grounder brought two more home for a 5-0 advantage.

Salem added eight more runs in the bottom of the fourth to close out the game.

Struthers lost its 11th in a row to drop to 2-20. The Wildcats beat Crestwood, 10-9, on April 3 and Lowellville, 8-2, on April 18. They scored 68 runs in their 20 losses.

Sisters Emily and Gabriella McDowell were Struthers’ starting pitcher and shortstop, respectively.

Gabriella is a Heartland Christian student, while Emily is a former Heartland Christian student.

Emily McDowell singled and scored Struthers’ lone run. She also took the loss, giving up nine earned runs and six walks in four innings.

Mooney 5, Beaver Local 1

BOARDMAN — Cardinal Mooney put four across in the first inning and cruised to a 5-1 win over Beaver Local on Friday in regular season softball action.

Addie Thurik had a home run for Beaver’s lone run. She also took the loss with six strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

Mooney’s Alexis McKinstry had 15 strikeouts. The Cardinals played no seniors or juniors.

Beaver Local (23-4) had won 10 straight.

The Beavers will host River View in a Div. IV district semifinal on Monday.

Jackson-Milton 8, Columbiana 7

NORTH JACKSON — Ivy McBeth scored on a wild pitch to cap a three-run seventh as Jackson-Milton topped Columbiana, 8-7, Friday.

For Columbiana, Ella Eisenbraun, Alexis Sperling, Landry Smith and Callahan Ward all had a hit and an RBI.

Eisenbraun was the losing pitcher with 10 strikeouts and a two walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Columbiana (13-10) ended its season having lost seven out of its last eight.
