WOOSTER – Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference champion United got a good lesson on what it will take to win at the district level on Wednesday.
The mostly underclass Golden Eagles saw their season come to an end with a 10-2 loss to No. 2 seed Jeromesville Hillsdale in a Div. VI district final at Wooster Triway. The Eagles (19-7) were the 11th seed and were playing in the school’s first district final.
United was behind the 8-ball early as the first four Falcons reached. An error allowed Emily Smith to score the first run of the game. Walks with bases loaded added a second and third run in the first inning.
Hillsdale (20-7) started the game with freshman pitcher Maddy Neece who had not pitched since May 14. Her last four outings before Wednesday were losses and she was third on the team in innings pitched behind Kennedy Fickes and Macy Mager. The Falcons likely had to use her because the team relied on Mager in the district semifinal on Tuesday, but it turned out not to be that big of a gamble as Neece ended the game with six strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs over seven innings.
In the second inning, Jillian Dietrich gave the Eagles a shot at a run with a two-out double but Neece was able to get out of it.
United was able to get back in the game in the third as a Chloe Angelo double followed by a Madison Aegerter single put the Eagles on the boar to make it 3-1.
The Falcons began to shut the door on the Eagles’ season in the bottom half of the third as Jordyn Fickes, who once hit two grand slams in one inning in 2025, belted a two-run homer to make it 5-1. An Aurora Martin RBI double, Kiki McFadden sacrifice fly followed by a Kennedy Fickes RBI double pushed the score to 8-1.
United scores its other run on an Aegerter sacrifice fly that scored Angelo in the fifth.
A McFadden RBI double in the fifth and Jordyn Fickes run off a fielder’s choice in the sixth rounded out the Falcons’ scoring.
Angelo sparked the Golden Eagles a the plate with two doubles. Dietrich had a double and single. Aegerter had a hit and two RBIs.
In the circle, Aegerter went six innings with six walks, two strikeouts and three earned runs. She threw 112 pitches with 58 for strikes. The Golden Eagles made five fielding errors.
United only loses Josie Wargo to graduation, so another run like this one won’t be out of the question.
Hillsdale has won seven state titles with the last 2018. The Falcons will meet fellow Wayne County Athletic League member Dalton at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at North Ridgeville. No. 5 seed Dalton beat Hillsdale 3-2 and 6-0 in regular season meetings.
