Minerva 4, Salem 3

MINERVA — Minerva senior Braydon Wood hit his first high school home run and the first by the Lions this season and Kaden Kandel had a two-run single in the fifth inning to drive in the winning run in a 4-3 decision over Salem on Tuesday.

Kandel went 2-for-3 and Lane Tarbet pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings to earn the victory. He allowed one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Minerva improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference. Salem drops to 1-7 and 0-3 in the EBC.

Braydon Van Dyne led the Quakers by going 3-for-4 and scored a run. Sophomore Brady Hendricks took the loss, giving up four runs, only one earned, with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Salem took a quick 1-0 lead at Carl Michael Field and it could have been more, but the Quakers had two runners throw out on the basepath.

Van Dyne doubled to the center field fence and Vinny Yannucci singled him home to put the Quakers up 1-0. Jaxson Douglas singled up the middle and the play was bobbled in the outfield leading to Yannucci tagged out sliding into third.

Salem opened the second inning with a walk to Cameron Martin, who was caught trying to steal second. Brandon Kana then walked, but was stranded on first.

Wood tied the score at 1-1 by leading off the bottom of the second with a home run over the left field fence.

Minerva got runners on first and third with two outs, but Salem second baseman Brandon Rocha threw out a runner at first on a close play to end the threat.

Salem took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth as Ben Kuboff was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jaxson Douglas walked to drive in another run.

Minerva rallied in the bottom of the fifth as Owen Frazier scored on a ground ball error and Kandel hit a two-run single for a 4-3 lead.

Kandel started for the Lions, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three.

The teams will play at Salem High School today.
