Beavers in OVAC final
Beaver Local 4, Oak Glen 2
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local’s softball team set itself for another title on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Beavers got 11 hits to subdue defending OVAC Class 4A softball champion Oak Glen, 4-2, at the I-470 Complex.
Beaver Local is 19-3 overall and has won six straight. The Buckeye 8 champions will meet Weir in the Class 4A final on Saturday at the I-470 Complex. Weir beat Edison 9-1 in the other semifinal. Beaver Local has not faced Weir High this season.
According to MaxPreps, the Beavers were ranked as the eighth best team in Div. IV in Ohio. Oak Glen (14-9) was ranked fifth overall in West Virginia and second overall in West Virginia Class AA.
Oak Glen had beaten Beaver Local 4-2 on March 24.
“We definitely hit the ball a bit better this time,” Beaver Local coach Mark Cashdollar said. “We came a long way from that first game.”
Beaver Local’s last and only OVAC softball title came in 2001.
“It’s been a long time,” Cashdollar said.
Brenna Jones’ double with one out in the second scored Mya Anderson to give Beaver Local a 1-0 lead. Jones added to the team’s total with an RBI double that scored Ciara Call in the fourth to make it 2-0.
Oak Glen would not back down, however, as three doubles by Nevaeh Heath, Danica Holden and Macy Hartung to start the fifth led the Bears to tie the game at 2.
Addie Thurik gave the Beavers the lead for good with a home run to center with one out in the fifth inning. She added an RBI single in sixth in addition to being masterful in the circle with 14 strikeouts and just one walk. Thurik threw 107 pitches with 77 for a strike. She is 11-2 on the season with a 1.96 ERA.
“The girls want to play; they really want to play,” Cashdollar said. “And that goes a long way.”
Mattie Carney took the loss for the Bears with seven strikeouts and no walks in six innings.
Oak Glen has lost four out of the last five.
The Bears are slated to host Madonna on Monday.
