Rettos helps winning cause
CADIZ — Beaver Local’s Luke Rettos scored 10 points and helped his East squad to a 106-82 victory in the District 5 Basketball Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game Sunday at Harrison Central.
Steubenville’s Cole Bowers, who led Big Red to the Ohio Division III state championship game the week before, was named the East MVP after scoring a team-high 19 points. Toronto’s Austin Buchanan followed with 18 points.
Dover’s Robbie Copple was the West MVP with a a game-high 23 points.
The East also won the girls game, 56-47, with East Liverpool’s LaNease Andrews playing on the winning team.
Steubenville’s Nylah McShan had a game-high 21 points to capture East MVP honors. Edison’s Sophia Henderson added nine points and Carrollton’s Emma Shafer eight for the winners.
Strasburg’s Sofia Secrest was the West MVP with a team-high 17 points.
Scholarship winners were East Liverpool’s Ava Green, Beaver Local’s Luke Rettos, Tusky Valley’s Sami Ward and River View’s Parker Andrews.
Pirates notch first victory
NEW YORK (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn had three hits and two RBIs, including a go-ahead single in the 10th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates threw out the potential tying run at the plate to hold off the New York Mets 4-3 on Sunday for their first victory this season.
Henry Davis added a critical RBI single with two outs in the 10th, and the Pirates got another home run from Brandon Lowe as they avoided their first 0-3 start since 2015.
With the Mets trailing 4-2 and two runners aboard in the bottom of the 10th, Juan Soto drove an RBI double to deep left-center. Francisco Lindor tried to score the tying run from first base but was cut down on a relay from center fielder Oneil Cruz to shortstop Jared Triolo to Davis at the plate for the first out of the inning.
Soto advanced to third on Bo Bichette’s groundout before Jorge Polanco flied out to the right-field fence to end it.
Dennis Santana (1-0) pitched a perfect inning for the win, and JosÈ Urquidy got three outs in his Pirates debut for his second major league save.
O’Hearn had three singles, including a run-scoring hit in the first. Lowe reached base four times and finished 5 for 12 with three homers and four RBIs during his first weekend with Pittsburgh.
Pirates starter Carmen Mlodzinski allowed two runs with a career-high eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Marcus Semien had a sacrifice fly in the second and Soto hit an RBI single in the fifth for the Mets, who struck out 16 times.
New York rookie Nolan McLean gave up two runs and struck out eight in five innings.

Pirates RHP Braxton Ashcraft (4-4, 2.71 ERA) opposes RHP Chase Burns (0-3, 4.57) in Cincinnati on Monday night.
RHP Clay Holmes (12-8, 3.53 ERA) makes his season debut Monday for the Mets, who open their first road trip against RHP Kyle Leahy (4-2, 3.07) and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Oak Glen sweeps Tyler
SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. — Oak Glen’s softball team scored two 18-0 wins over Tyler on Saturday.
In the first game, Brayley Lash had two doubles, a triple and five RBIs for the Bears. Mattie Carney added three hits including a double and two RBIs. Kylie Robinson had a double, single and three RBIs. Carney threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts over four innings.
In the second game, Carney hit two doubles with two RBIs. Danica Holden had a double and three RBIs and also threw a four-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Oak Glen (4-3) hosts Wheeling Central Catholic on Monday.
